@waifu 13, but only because my dad used to go to the pirated media bazaar where they burned universal region dvds

1?. Blockbuster was not very widespread here but they did exist I believe? It's been a while, but I did use a shitload of video stores so I'll count it anyways. I can't recall if I ever touched a walkman or equivalent however

@f0x @waifu how can you get 8 without getting 6??? a walkman is just a portable cassette player

@zonk @f0x @waifu Because casette player (very widespread) and portable casette player is a different enough thing

You'd probably had to have been a teenager (or was in a house of one) in the 80s to beginning 90s

Arguably the Walkman series includes Sony's CD and Minidisc portable offerings. They may have branded some later MP3 players and such that way too. Personally I'd count the CD and Minidisc offerings because they are portable physical media players.

@Leyonhjelm @f0x @waifu @zonk Oh, you're right. I did use a portable CD player, my mom had one, so if that counts, 0

@Leyonhjelm @coolboymew @f0x @waifu that's interesting! i didn't know that sony did a cd walkman. in my mind it was always the portable cassette player.

also as an aside, i am shocked that the humble pager isn't anywhere on that list

@f0x @pwm @waifu im not sure if it counts because i am an extremely atypical zoomer and also a massive retro tech nerd. i explicitly went out of my way to do most of the stuff on the list as a kid.

i have fond memories of when i snuck my dad's portable cassette player to school (that had a strict no electronics policy) and the teachers didn't even bother taking it away, earning the jealousy of all of my classmates (and a talking to from my mom while my dad pretended he wasn't about to raid his storage closet to find his old cassettes)

@zonk @waifu @Leyonhjelm @coolboymew TBF pager tech just became specialized, not obsolete.

Six months ago I'd have agreed with the idea that we should only count tape, but I have in recent months switched to minidisc for my music on the go from my phone and the minidisc walkman hits the same chords as the tape walkman did without the problems of tape being tape. Even more than the CD ones did for me (mine was an Aiwa when I moved to CD, but it replaced a great tape walkman for me).

I think one of the reasons minidisc feels more like tape than CD did was the integral plastic cassette and the delightful mechanical clunk of opening and shutting the door when you change media.

In all cases I find my music is more premeditated and I enjoy it more and most importantly I anticipate it more. I find myself eager to be in a spot where I use it instead of it being completely secondary to what I'm doing as background noise.

@Leyonhjelm @zonk @f0x @waifu pagers are probably not on there because they were the most useful for actual professionals, not that anyone else didn't use them, but I don't recall seeing them a lot outside of that context

The list is good because it actually focuses on everyday things most people had access to. Despite cultural references, most people never needed a pager. Just enough coin to call home from a payphone if they needed to.

@lizzy i get all points but two.

I have navigated with a paper map. but only as part of mandatory orienteering education. they teach u this in school still, how to read a paper map and keep it cardinally aligned.

and I own a dictionary. specifically, ku. maybe one might say it doesn’t count if it’s a conlang? but screw that, two way dictionaries are useful for language learning and that’s what ku is, it contains English<->toki pona, so there’s absolutely no way this isn’t at least equally legit as having an English<->German dictionary

I also own a film camera but I’ve never taken pictures with it. so im not free of that point

@lizzy i love sending faxes to people to annoy them

i literally bought a modem so i could use windows fax and scan (although then i ended up with 5 modems and a dial up server..)
