@ska @rose @hipsterelectron

it's a diy keyboard with a custom layout, aside from the letter keys, everything else would very likely mismatched, wrong, or missing -- unless i went through the really high effort of printing custom keycaps, and repeating that every time i modify the layout

so i just went with blank, they look cool

@ska @hipsterelectron @rose

the place left of a (which usually is caps lock) on my keyboard is <esc> when pressed, <ctrl> when held

backspace and return are on the thumb keys, as well as two custom modifiers (<raise> and <lower>)

so to type numbers, instead of reaching all the way up, i can press <raise> with my thumb, and qwertyuiop, as that maps to 1234567890

the symbols are also mapped to the same columns as the numbers but one row bellow, so instead of shift+<number>, i can do <raise> + asdfghjkl;, and i get !@#$%^&*()

so on and so on, it’s all made to minimize how much my hands need to move, and specially made to minimize how much my wrists need to bend, as not only does this makes typing code a lot more comfortable, it also greatly reduces the chances of me getting rsi

@ska @navi @hipsterelectron @rose number row thing reminds me that mine's from sun keyboards: esc, 1…9, 0, -, =, `

And swaps of caps lock, backspace, … are pretty common. Here I got enter where tab typically is to reduce chances of fat-fingering enter while also having tab being more accessible (put on a thumb key on my ergodox).

@navi @ska @hipsterelectron @rose okay how about this… custom PCB assembled by hand, custom 3D-printed keycap profile, custom layout based on carpalx?

also combos. there’s a whole bunch so i’mma explain the few most important ones in qwerty terms

s+d = backspace
d+f = tab
w+e = esc
t+g (upper right corner of left half) = return

and a bunch of special characters on the right half, some with diagonal combos. also i get modifiers by holding certain letter keys

arrows/navigation = left side outer thumb, switches the layer so the left side has arrows and right side has mousekeys etc., also the touchpad then moves the text cursor via emulated keypresses instead of the mouse cursor.
the outermost keys are only used for e.g. games because chords and combos would get in the way

why? because comfy. can’t have RSI if you don’t overuse your weakest fingers

oh and the touchpad does pixel-precise circular scrolling

@navi @ska @hipsterelectron @rose switches are pink kailh chocs (that i lubricated by hand…) so like, the slightest feather touch compared to normal keyboards

@navi @ska @hipsterelectron @rose my laptop isn’t much better. i rearranged the letter keycaps but none of the modifiers are what the label says, not even shift

@ska @mia @navi @hipsterelectron @rose One thing I'm more noticing is all the vowels and more or less soft consonants grouped on the right-hand side.

@lanodan @ska @navi @hipsterelectron @rose basically the foolproof way to get optimized layouts like that is to take a well-used keyboard and put the shiniest keys on the home row
