There's a difference in everything when a project grows in a way that is according to demand.
People want more automation sure, but not at the cost of loosing civil rights and their own brain capacity.
MS didn't start organically itself. It just had luck with a contract with IBM (and IBM though that MS was gonna tank and fuck them).
And lets not talk about after that with the support of of US counter intelligence.
