You know what else is gay as hell is the EU bullshit where they make plastic bottle caps stay attached to the bottle. There are some drinks here thatdo that and every time I get one I pull the cap all the way off anyway

@vriska man, the bullshit we’re subjected to here

“separate cap and carton for the environment”
“cap stays on — for the environment”

@vriska
in germany there is capital punishment for not personally micro-managing the plastic waste stream

@mia @vriska It's like germans weren't mocked enough for sorting glass in different colors

@lanodan @vriska yeah still doing that in the age of automated sorting systems

@mia @vriska since i visited a garbage incinerator plant in Southern Germany that took the carefully separated garbage and burned it all together, I stopped properly separating Sheew

@mia genuinely despise the EU except for Ireland and they only get a pass becauseI'm from there and deeply catholic

@kaia @vriska @mia Wish you had the footage for me, I had years ago a fucking annoying & loud German roommate who started screeching when I didn't sort the McDonald's paper bag correctly

@evamik @vriska @mia
the plant operator explained that it was important to separate the trash, since they had to dial in the mix of plastic and residual waste, with the latter being wetter.

so it makes sense, but selling it as ecological is deceptive.

@kaia @evamik @vriska foam flotation separates plastics from ordinary waste, near-infrared sensors can easily spot ABS and PS unless they’re very dark. electrostatic tech can handle dark colors and processes using that can achieve 99% purity but it isn’t widely used yet and requires pre-sorting because ABS that contains fire retardants like with a lot of electronics is unusable

@condret @vriska @kaia @mia We're funnily having this scenario that we require well burning material which plastic is mixed among waste, so basically all plastic gets burned for electricity. We've to pay EU fines for this but apparently this is fine due to profitability. We're even importing waste to burn from Italy because we've a lack of waste to keep the plants running :D

@evamik @vriska @kaia @mia so is that better or worse than landfills?

@condret @vriska @kaia @mia Well yeah but it is funny for me that sorting the plastics doesn't really do a thing in the end

@condret @evamik @kaia @mia @vriska it's better than a land fill, to burn it at the proper incinerator. sorting (and any implication of recycling civilian plastic) consumer use plastic is a world wide scam

Few exceptions exist with semi clean, large amounts of industrial use plastics, for plastic recycling, that's it

@evamik @vriska @kaia that’s state of the art though. we don’t have that available everywhere. the plastic recycling rate in germany is exceptionally high (>50%) in part because we have separate waste streams for packaging materials and in part because germans are germans. in every other nation you’d have to make waste management easier for the consumers to gain efficacy but germans need overregulation to thrive and will get restless without anyone telling them the Extremely Correct And Optimal way to do things

@kaia@pleroma.soykaf.com @mia@shrimptest.0x0.st @vriska@lizards.live thats what they do with recycling here (except its just put in a landfill, not burned)
