@meso The joke used to be that it was like buying a car with the hood welded shut. It is now basically that. Even if you crack it open, everything is soldered and epoxied in place. No user serviceable parts inside.

@p @meso The battery itself is soldered to the motherboard.

I've torn a few down before to salvage parts but even that is dubious. The ssd for example has a format that makes it near impossible to use anywhere else. Can't salvage the ram any more because it's integrated into the board as well.

@Tony @p @meso Exactly. I mean just buy a raspberry pi or a something.

I'm not paying $3000+ for something that's going to shit the bed in a year.

Look at this ssd man, its a 1tb drive I can't do shit with. lol

@Tony @ins0mniak @meso Ah. My motherboard has an M.2 slot, the Turing Pi 2 has four; I think it's a pretty common form factor.

@p @Tony @meso Yeah exactly. fits on literally nothing but macs as far as I know.

Like a normal m.2 is a soldid commodity. I can pop em in and out of all my systems no sweat.

I keep a few on hand in case something fails. I can just restore from my backups.

the m1, lattepanda, and the h3+ all use the same notch thingy

@koropokkur @p @meso heh yeah. Those get handed out in schools alot because they're so locked down, tho I've hear of kids coming up with pretty clever ways to hack them and play games or have their messangers.

> I know he was annoyed about that gore stuff ban

There wasn't a ban (just attachments removed https://git.freespeechextremist.com/gitweb/?p=fse;a=blob;f=lib/site/mrf/yshl.ex;h=50a0028f6454693cc4e67447750cb0f978e225c1;hb=HEAD ), and it wasn't due to gore, it was gorespamming. He was hopping alts when he got blocked by someone on DRC to gorespam them from FSE. Every time he'd promise to stop, and say he forgot that he was on FSE instead of DRC, which was a lie (and one that relied on me not reading his public posts on the server I operate): he deliberately hopped alts to gorespam he would complain about getting blocked and tell whoever he was gorespamming that he had alts all over.

So he complained about the error message being condescending and REEEE'd at me a while. By that point, he mostly hung out at DRC and just used FSE to gorespam people when he got blocked there, so he didn't need FSE if I stopped buying the excuses.

> I wanted him share his stuff and picks of him salvaging from part he got.

I've seen pictures he takes of stripping things down, yes. Sometimes interesting.

@Tony @Soy_Magnus @ins0mniak @meso @NonPlayableClown I feel like, if an entire page of the local timeline is him posting exploded heads and mangled genitals and whatever, it's enough.

There's enough to hate that I can understand; but if there's a specific complaint about Starlink I'm interested. I think LEO shit is so great, even if his company doesn't do well, it's going to solve undersea cable monopoly of networking.

@0 @Tony @Soy_Magnus @p @meso @NonPlayableClown Watching the bluecheck twitter meltdown was pretty funny.

I feel like taking that toy away did us a service.

It very out of mind to me, I don't even trust it to handle networking, I wire out to a switch I own, so I have not thought about opening or servicing the dish (which has worked very well).

@ins0mniak @Tony @p @meso you can use it to fix another itoddlers Mac when the flash bricks itself and it goes to dfu mode

Pros: bluechecks mad, fedi gets bigger.

Cons: George Takei's fedi account.

@p @Tony @Soy_Magnus @0 @meso @NonPlayableClown I had fun tormenting Taylor Lorenz.

@p @Tony @Soy_Magnus @0 @meso @NonPlayableClown She's the Washington Post tech reporter too.

I actually saw a guy fire up a masodon instance during that whole thing and within a few days was trying to raise several thousand dollars for "server costs" lol

@Tony @Soy_Magnus @p @0 @meso @NonPlayableClown Haha I forgot about that.

Only thing I could thing of is the clown was using AWS but even that charges you by usage. having 20 users should run for pennies lol

You guys are just too poor to afford a full gorf network. It's worth millions. gorf_pub

It would be interesting to see where sweetspots occur. I really have no clue about the higher-end of things, I still host my shit on $5 VPS, but I also actively discourage users with random unannounced downtime and verbal abuse.

It's gotta plateau with actual hardware and what's available in market, 7666/p/graf/moon would have insights on that. Specifically wrt pressure points in software / hardware.

@Tony @Soy_Magnus @p @0 @meso @NonPlayableClown Yeah mine is cheap.

I used to run off an sbc, but Im too cheap to pay comcast for a static ip.

I've heard it can screw with federation as well.

Ephemeral posts are going to save cheap nodes. I also saw a very clever usage of slab storage and caching that would also help, I think that was from phnt@fluffytail.
