@Erpel kinda mind-boggling how many people seem to be having trouble with tht soldering; i’m almost wondering if it’s all just bad equipment because it’s really not hard

@mia@movsw.0x0.st Biggest problem is that most people just don't think about it and once established bad habits just carry on.

There is ofc a diffrent level of wuality needed in "I solder this pcb as a hobby" or "this pcb is used in a big industrial machine and should work well"

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space I can export the powerpoint easily if you need it in a better quality than just some screenshots

@mia @Erpel whats tht?

and yes bad equipment doesn't help. my quality of soldering went WAY up when I got a pinecil vs the 10€ 0.1W iron i had before

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space @mia@movsw.0x0.st
THT - Through Hole Technique
basically the wire thorugh a hole on the PCB

in contrast to this SMD
Surface Mounted Device - where the device is soldered directly on the surface of the PCB

@Erpel @mia personally i dont know when is the best time to cut the component leads and i suck at bending them :)

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space @mia@movsw.0x0.st get one of those: https://www.conrad.de/de/p/kemo-electronic-abbiegevorrichtung-kemo-inhalt-1-st-425869.html

There are a little bit more quality ones (the plastic is way better) you can get for like 5 or 6€

@aetios @Erpel @mia pinecil is probably smaller and more precise than the random iron you had before

Definitely one of the best purchases!

@aetios @fial @Erpel i got the cheapest ersa soldering station. the tool is very light has and super flexible wires, and the tips are really good

i’ve used some much more expensive weller stuff during an internship and it wasn’t anywhere near that nice to use even with leaded solder

@fial @aetios @Erpel yeah i would have loved this even if i already have a station (because sometimes there’s stuff i need to solder on things i can’t move around so i have to go and get the whole station every time)

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space @mia@movsw.0x0.st @fial@ihatebeinga.live huh... can't remember of hearing of that device before...

Maybe something I can recommend to my trainees? 8They always want to know what to buy so they could solder at home)

@Erpel @mia @fial the pinecil isnt super cheap but definitely a good and portable price performance ratio device https://pine64eu.com/product/pinecil-smart-mini-portable-soldering-iron/

@Erpel @aetios @fial yeah it’s good especially for smaller jobs that don’t need a lot of continuous heat

@Erpel @aetios @fial ersa i-con pico costs twice as much i think; i’d recommend that as a more “serious” option. but then it’s also a good idea to get some additional tips (hollow tip for soldering QFP parts, THT tip, maybe something for desoldering), so probably closer to €200 in total?

@mia @fial @Erpel This is too much money for someone who just wants to dip their toes in. btw i almost only use the conical standard tip.

@aetios @Erpel @mia @fial
plus it can be served by a modern powerbank as was said (must be a modern one that supports fast charging though, had problems with one that didnt support it)

also the pinecel supports changing tips, which is a huge plus (so you can have different types of solder tips, or you can replace a solder tip that is becoming shit because of no proper care)

@Erpel @aetios @fial i was skeptical about the THT one, seemed like a pointless gimmick since it’s already really easy with the conical tip that comes with the station. but it’s actually really nice to have when you’re like, soldering 40 pins in a row. that’ll take you about as many seconds 🚀

@aetios @fial @Erpel yeah for sure. it’s something to consider for people learning electronics though

or for people like me who like to set themselves up for success because ADD makes it so easy to become discouraged by any minor difficulty

@kura @aetios @Erpel @fial if the pinecil had been a thing by the time i bought my station i definitely would have considered getting it instead, it’s a really good deal

@mia @fial @Erpel that implies having the financial space for it at all which is rare for students

but yes i agree good tools make ALL the difference!

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space @mia@movsw.0x0.st @fial@ihatebeinga.live trust me: the students I work with are having the financial space for that...

(they get 1127€ a month before taxes and social security stuff)

@mia @fial @aetios @Erpel i have that quicko/ksger thing, but i got the one without the transformer because its the worst made transformer ever. plugged in to a regular AC cable that has its own brick. did buy the genuine feita tips though.

its been great.

@Erpel @mia @fial oh they're trainees, i see. Still, if they're living on their own that might not be a lot of money. I was just speaking from my own experience.

@mia @aetios @Erpel @fial the pinecel is based on the ts 100 (they do use the same tips) which came out 2017 or so.

attached is the ts101 (bottom, grey case - also the follow up model of the ts100) and the pinecel (top, clear case)

@Erpel @mia @aetios @fial that's not a lot of money after rent, electricity, water, food, household stuff, clothing, etc etc. unless they live with their parents or have rich parents but is that really the default for most people?

@lucy @Erpel @aetios @fial i was getting by on €600-800 and still bought that station and a bunch of other stuff 🙃

really depends on individual circumstances…

@icedquinn@blob.cat @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @fial@ihatebeinga.live @mia@movsw.0x0.st @aetios@sns.minovsky.space We are talking about people starting around the age of 16/17 up to finished A-level in their early 20s.

Most of them are living with their parents, so the money is okay. (I am aware that 1100€ before tax isn't much money)

But even if you don't live at home, there are possibilities to get extra funding from the state by what's called "Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe (BAB)". Its also not much but helps a lot to get around. (ofc special rules aplies)

@icedquinn @lucy @Erpel @fial @aetios tbh just the two i have in the basement collecting dust would take up way too much space in lucy’s apartment (they’re big full-range boxes, 15”)

@Erpel @mia @aetios @icedquinn @fial instead of offering the generous opportunity to beg for money, the government could just not take it away in the first place 🙃 but whatever, ig it works

@lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @mia@movsw.0x0.st @aetios@sns.minovsky.space @icedquinn@blob.cat @fial@ihatebeinga.live well basically, they only pay social security stuff and no taxes.
The limits for so called "midijobs" have been raised to 2000€ a month

@Erpel @mia @aetios @fial @lucy i hate social security

there was some report about how tax cuts were not actually helping poors at all and since i did taxes this year its like

well no shit, because i'm allowed to write off 10,000$ but not from the social security half, so you could raise the tax break an infinite amount and i still lose 15% flat (this is the USA so that 15% goes to old people you don't get anything whatsoever unless you survive to whatever date they're always raising)

@Erpel @mia @aetios @icedquinn @fial I'd rather not have to pay for "social securities" if i can't afford it. yes it's important bit not worth accumulating debt.

@icedquinn @Erpel @fial @mia @aetios exactly. i don't wanna beg them for money, so despite having no income health insurance is still taking my money (with or without force) based on a "fictional income". peak german mindset.
