@nik i need something in my life that i can only get sitting on the side of a blackhawk with my legs dangling out of the door on my way to raid a compound with 11 other people who are all armed to the teeth and all have completed the same pipeline of intense physical and mental abuse

@scathach@stereophonic.space @vivi@misskey.bubbletea.dev but that's why the military exists and why anyone who signs up to it is signing up to do

@nik @scathach@stereophonic.space no thats too reductionist to be true i think. a military’s job is to defend the interest of whatever sovereign state it belongs to, that usually means either literal defense of ones own territory or projecting their power beyond their borders according to the interest of their state.

that power is usually achieved through arms and it leads to killing if you get attacked hy another country or when the power projection of your particular country involves intervening in armed conflict, bu not every job in the military requires you to operate arms that will kill people, not every one joins with that desire, a lot of people who join with that desire dont actually feel good about the death that occurs and depending on what policy is in place in whatever your country youre from you could prolly spend an entire military career as infantry never harming anyone and only acting as a deterrent or training (with) allied forces.

whatever me and skadi were soying out at would probably involve life or death fire fights with other ppl so your original question is still valid, but it is reductionist to say “the military is just there to kill people” like everyone who joins does so with a desire to line up random people and execute them point blank

@vivi @nik @scathach okay jokes aside, the people i met who were either in the military or on their way to get into that line of work were all deeply insecure powertripping knuckleheads. many eventually went to the police instead. go figure.
except for the few higher ranking guys I met at one of my old jobs, they were very different people entirely.
that said i can't imagine going through intentional mental and physical abuse as you put it, all for supporting "muh country" i fucking hate this shithole.

@lucy @nik @scathach theres nothing wrong with not volunteering for the military and i can sympathize with how you feel because i dont like it here and i feel uncomfortable living here. but if you cannot even fathom why someone else would join the military or any other comparable thing then you at least need to recognize that your mindset is destructive to said country

no matter if youre a commie or an ancap, no natter how upset you are with the current state of things or how much whomever your opposition is, at the end of the day you and your fellow countrymen should be bought into the success of where you are living, that is the requirement before we can even THINK about running a country or improving it at all. and if you hate your country so much that you cant even conceive what is going on in the mind of someone in the military or any comparable job, then my guess is you are probably past that point and if everyone is like you nothing will ever get better and that society will collapse
