@kaia @lain @lucy we need to bring drive ins back, they can operated much more cheaply and the novelty will draw people in

@lucy @kaia @lain Honestly I feel like putting on older and cheaper to license movies would be a positive draw for people tbh

You could also put a petrol station on the drive in cinema land and use the movies as a bit of a loss leader

Just spitballing

@arcana @kaia @lain how would drive ins be cheaper?
by far the largest amount is spend on audio processors, next would be the projectors and renting movies to play. the remaining costs on staff and rent and heating are rather small.

@lucy @kaia @lain That said, a cursory glance, the costs seem very doable

@arcana @kaia @lain showing older movies is getting more and more profitable because lower licensing costs and people are actually interested in that.
also live streams of musicals, operas and concerts generally go well.
it's just the occasional family-friendly romcom slop makes it still somewhat worth it. cinemas have to entirely restructure or if the trend continues most would not be able to continue operating.

@arcana @kaia @lain they pay millions a year on audio processing and that number... license for what exactly? it vastly differs depending on what you wanna show

@lucy @kaia @lain Yep definitely, they’re in major need of a restructure. So many new films go direct to Netflix or whatever anyway. I feel like cinemas need to change to primarily showing classic movies, seasonal movies, etc.

Right now it’s just “see a film a bit sooner maybe, on a bigger screen”. I think it should be a whole event, and I think drive ins would greatly lower the costs too

@lucy @kaia @lain 40% of box office is the studio license for films generally, in the UK

@phnt @kaia @arcana @lain without the concessions it would have become unprofitable ages ago. hence it's getting so outrageously expensive

@phnt @kaia @arcana @lain for recent movies you have little say in how much to charge for your ticket btw. as a cinema. the publisher puts restrictions on how much you can charge, when to offer screenings for their movies etc.
