It doesn't feel generic. The characters have a reasonable amount of depth, and although it's a classical fantasy setting, that doesn't mean it's bad. For some, the idea of reminiscing in a life you used to live is fond and relatable. I'll go in my old military things and look at stuff I kept, and miss my friends and our combined struggles (even if the reason we were there was bad). I can relate to Frieren and her journey. I like it.
