@dagda if it's a technical reason I'll assume it's so that they can LOD things further away (render them at a lower quality/resolution for better performance) while hiding this quality decrease from the player. ("smoke and mirrors")

or it just appeals to their taste aesthetically shrug

@dagda tbh it could also be that they overuse it because the volumetric fog feature exists in the engine and they are overly eager to show it off without properly considering aesthetics/design

@lizzy we are no longer trying to render Turok on N64 tho. Putting up these shitclouds is worse then seeing some jaggied geometry or LOD model imho.
In gen 8 games this was less of a problem even with open world games

@dagda yea i agree, when tweaked properly LOD doesn't really need to be "painted over" with fog but they might not have the time or skills to do these optimizations the right way so they just slap some fog over it

i'd say it's comparable to a piano player overusing the pedal to hide mistakes
