@lucy but arch is the kind of distro where when you learn how to use linux it's perfect because it doesnt have any oddities and you dont need help for it everything works as expected and is comfy

@meso @lucy arch helps you learn how to use linux because pacman breaks everything every time you update ur system and u have to learn how to fix it

@meso when there's a harddrive failure at runtime the kernel just silently remounts your root fs as readonly. This is not distro related.

@lucy @meso would you prefer crashes or data corruption? This isn't really a linux issue imo

@lucy @snacks @meso got nothing to do with windows or poettering

imo the kernel should make resources available to user space, keep its promises (i.e. fail writes it can’t guarantee) and otherwise get the hell out of the way. if you want to stop the world and get a big red warning about your failed root fs, that’s a user space problem, and something that everyone has different expectations and requirements for

the bsod thing was half joking

@lucy I hate that proprietary kernel too.

@Suiseiseki do you think GPLv2 is a non-free license or what
1

@lucy If Linux was actually under that license and the all source code was provided, it would be a free kernel.

Linux contains several proprietary programs without source code and Linux developers maintain and recommend a massive collection of proprietary software derivatives works without source code ("linux-firmware"); https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/

@Suiseiseki im going to install alpine linux with musl and busybox instead of gnu tools how does that make you feel
2
2
5
@lucy It makes me sad you would install a proprietary BusyBox/Linux distro that is also functionally inferior to GNU/Linux.

GNU is not merely a collection of tools - tools are only some GNU packages and glibc and coreutils and inetutils etc are only a few GNU packages; https://gnu.org/software/

@Suiseiseki did you ever look at gnu source code?

@snacks @lucy The source code if full of GNU/Freedom - the only sanity.

@snacks @Suiseiseki @lucy It's only free if you don't value the time spent on debugging GNU software.

@snacks @Suiseiseki I think at this point alpine makes a lot of sense to me honestly.. im fed up with gnu retardation and systemd annoyances. If only i could remove posix brainrot but ig that's not happening on a linux system.

@lucy @Suiseiseki alpine was the only distro i couldn't get wifi to work with tbh. I hate openrc

@lucy @Suiseiseki you can have bsd brainrot instead of linux brainrot with void
3

1
@snacks @Suiseiseki i thought about void but I'd want to get rid of glibc at which point my void install would be slightly worse than the default alpine setup, which would also get rid of other gnu tools. The only thing im not sure about is what bootloader to use because of course I'd get rid of grub. Maybe I'll just use limine that works really good and im familiar with it from a hobby project.

@snacks @Suiseiseki @lucy BSD has a different brainrot. Every single one of them has tools with different features and options. bsdtar is probably the only one that has any actual consistency. And the only way to be truly portable across BSD is to follow posix.

@lucy @Suiseiseki linux kernel worsks as uefi bootloader even without systemd i think?

@Suiseiseki @lucy @snacks Then you didn't use GNU software enough; aka, you are a normie.

that's what i expected tbh

@snacks @lucy What is Linux if not a kernel?

Yes, via "LILO" you can make Linux work as a bootloader than can be loaded by a proprietary UEFI, but that's insanity.

It's garbage compared to the GNU Grub OS that is 100% free software and can be the bootloader in GNUboot.
1

@snacks @Suiseiseki I'll setup void linux with musl, busybox, runit and limine then

@phnt @lucy @snacks I use many GNU packages extensively - the error rate is just that low.
0

1
@snacks @lucy It cannot.

Linux needs a bootloader to set things up before it will operate - what is loaded in that case is Linux modified into a bootloader.

@lucy @Suiseiseki @snacks runit is pretty cool . but idk lately ive gained appreciation for systemd ngl

@fiore @lucy @snacks If 9front was actually free software that would be a better idea, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

@snacks @lucy GRUB is a stage 0 or stage 1 or stage 2 bootloader.
1
0
0
@Suiseiseki @lucy i have never heard about grub being a stage 0 bootloader
2

@snacks @lucy Coreboot isn't a bootloader - it just inits the hardware - GNU Grub is there to finish the hardware init and allow the user to enjoy a GNU OS and also contains a bootloader.
2

2
@snacks @Suiseiseki @lucy What his autism is saying is probably that it boots from first block in MBR (stage 0), boots kernels after initial MBR bootstrap (stage 1) and can chainload other bootloaders (stage 2).
0

@Suiseiseki @lucy stage 0 is the basic hw initialization that's usually handled by bios/uefi on pcs like initializing the memory controller
2

@Suiseiseki @lucy now shut the fuck up, i have to get proprietary games on proprietary vms with proprietary mods running
0
1
3
@snacks @lucy Yes, GRUB does hardware initialization and can set the video mode on some hardware.

GRUB can be a coreboot payload, thus it can be part of what is on the SPI flash.

@Suiseiseki @lucy woah, it can handle shit that's usually handled by the os, totally makes it a stage 0 bootloader

@Suiseiseki Despite the fact that it's founder is a particularly nasty Jew and most of it's developers & promoters are max-woke freaks, GNU is simply the greatest operating system ever invented.

For so many reasons.

Anybody using Windows or macOS is a f'in' idiot!

@Suiseiseki @snacks on modern (efi) systems you can boot linux without a bootloader

@lucy @snacks >Without a booloader

>Proprietary UEFI bootloader

@snacks @Suiseiseki @lucy Funny you say that, because it silently fails at initializing graphics mode specifically because the secureboot implementation in GRUB has been borked for like 2 years. It can't load its special fonts, because the module isn't signed.

That's why on secure boot systems that don't have the GRUB console mode enabled, your border is just a bunch of rectangles with question marks.

@dagda @fiore @lucy @snacks I was pointing out that the Cirno character is proprietary.

Every time I've looked at a non-toy OS that is not GNU, I've found proprietary software and by proprietary senses are telling me that 9front is proprietary - but I don't have time to look right now - but I reckon I'll find some if I look later.
0

1
@fiore @dagda @lucy @snacks Yes, a weak license is often chosen to allow combination with proprietary software (which is not allowed by the GPLv{2,3}-{only,or-later} or to allow the software to be turned proprietary and used to take the users freedom, but it is possible (but uncommon) for a substantial program under a weak license to be fully free.
0

@dagda @fiore @lucy @snacks `All other non-permissive additional terms are considered "further restrictions" within the meaning of section 10. If the Program as you received it, or any part of it, contains a notice stating that it is governed by this License along with a term that is a further restriction, you may remove that term.`
1

1
@Suiseiseki @fiore @lucy @snacks including the slur is an addendum, not a restriction. You are still in the process of gifting or selling a software with all 4 freedoms protected, you just provide them with the slur aswell in addition.
1
0
1
@dagda @fiore @lucy @snacks There is a requirement to add a slur, which is not listed as permitted under 7abcde or f and thus the user is granted the freedom or removing such further restriction.

Furthermore, editing the AGPLv3 to add any word infringes the license on the text itself; "Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed." (permission to use the AGPLv3 text in another license is given separately provided a different name is used, the GNU preamble is removed as well as any mention of GNU).
