Lucy [hiatus era] 𒌋𒁯

there's many places across africa I'd like to visit but the people there would kill me

@lucy Very unlikely

t. traveled in Africa as an obvious queer and people couldn't tell

In general the more transphobic and homophobic a place is the less likely people are to assume you're gay or trans and the easier it is to blend in

@scathach @lucy thats interesting. I personally still wouldnt risk it though

@nemesis @lucy As long as your documents are in order you'd definitely be okay

@scathach @lucy my docs are all in order

idk. my parents dont think I should visit even brazil or india, africa would be even worse than those I would expect

@nemesis @scathach @lucy tbf I don’t think people would get hate crimed in those places because people could tell but just because they’re dangerous places in general

@nemesis @lucy No offense but your parents are sheltered coastal liberals, I wouldn't put much stock in their judgements about other countries

You'd absolutely be okay in Brazil and India (although most Indian men are vile lechers) and almost certainly most of Africa too

If anything bad happens to you in Africa it would be because you're a rich white American rather than because you're trans

@arcana @lucy @scathach to some degree yeah. my parents were specifically referencing trans stuff though, and the part of brazil I would have considered visiting was quite safe though afaik, very likely safer than places I've been in in the US

@scathach @lucy yeah that makes sense, theyre probably just paranoid about it

@scathach @nemesis it's illegal to be trans in most of africa tho

@scathach @nemesis @lucy I do agree with this in the sense that the issue in Brazil would just be crime in general depending on where you were, the issue in India would just be lecherous men and rapists, and in Africa it would be the fact they just like clobbering people over the head in general

@lucy @nemesis @scathach I doubt the intelligence of the average African border guard to even know what that means, they’d probably just ask for a bribe and then leave you in a ditch for not paying it

@nemesis @lucy Speaking personally whenever my family moved to a new country my relatives back home would freak out about all the "unsafe" stuff happening in the country and in literally every case it turned out completely fine

Like, yeah, sometimes the embassy prohibited us from traveling to certain regions of the country where civil unrest was going on, but as long as we stayed in the green zone and took basic common sense precautions we were completely safe

@arcana @nemesis @lucy That assessment of Africa, at least for the countries I've lived in, is wrong

@arcana @scathach @lucy brazil at least would be fine I think, especially the south which is where I would have gone if my parents hadnt nixed that

india is sketchier for sure though I know at least two white women who have visited there for like a month and been fine despite so I imagine it wouldnt be too bad

@mischievoustomato @nemesis @lucy @scathach pretty much

The places that I think the issue could actually be due to being trans would be the likes of UAE and Saudi Arabia, where it’s illegal but they avoid the regular dangerous stuff by beating their lower castes with stickd

@arcana @nemesis @lucy Beautiful thing about Africa is you can bribe your way out of pretty much everything for not a whole lot of money

@scathach @lucy I genuinely wouldnt go somewhere where being trans is actually illegal tbh. huge legal hassle and while its possible you can dupe or bribe them it doesnt seem worth the risk to me

@scathach @nemesis @lucy weren’t you basically in US specific stuff rather than just out in the cities and villages on your own?

@nemesis @arcana @lucy India would probably be fine, I'd just avoid walking alone at night and be liberal with pepper spray

@arcana @nemesis @lucy @scathach africa is a really diverse continent, so the people in e.g. Ethiopia and Gabon are completely different.

@arcana @nemesis @lucy @mischievoustomato I've flown through UAE with estrogen a few times and it was fine

@scathach @nemesis @lucy that explains the functionality of those places

@scathach @arcana @lucy > avoid walking alone at night

i'd avoid that in any country

@arcana @nemesis @lucy No, it's not like Iraq or Afghanistan, we lived like an hour from the embassy in normal housing in most cases
1

2
@scathach @nemesis @lucy that would probably lead to the police arresting or questioning you and they’re likely just as lecherous if not more so than the others

@scathach @lucy how would I explain bringing estrogen with me?
1

@nemesis @lucy You know trans people are probably in the single digit percentage of people who take estrogen, right?

Besides, the average customs goon almost certainly doesn't know estrogen from paracetamol

@lain @nemesis @lucy @scathach there’s a full on psychological assessment if you join things like the intelligence, military, and police in Britain to ensure you’re extremely unlikely to accept bribes.

@nemesis @lucy You think they'd transvestigate every single person who enters their country?

@scathach @nemesis they'd kill me. or put me in jail to get killed there.

@mischievoustomato @nemesis @lucy @scathach corporal punishment against the gutter caste is basically the best way to ensure public safety

@scathach @lucy yeah thats fair, I may be overgeneralizing from experience with the TSA

@genmaicha @nemesis @lucy @scathach oh I know, it has more genetic diversity than anywhere else. Don’t worry, I’m the last person to mistake a Tutsi for a Mashona

@scathach @nemesis @lucy @mischievoustomato I more mean in terms of having documentation incorrect or getting into bother. Though I highly doubt they’d do anything beyond deporting to most foreigners

@nemesis @lucy TSA is by FAR the worst I've ever experienced

Most you'd need to look out for with African airport security is they might try to "confiscate" a "dangerous" (valuable-looking) item, which can usually be avoided by just being stern with them. I can guarantee that you being trans won't even cross their minds

@nemesis @scathach @lucy we walked alone at night in Ireland and New Hampshire haven’t we? I’ve also walked around Newcastle upon Tyne city center at 2am in the morning looking for a missing person. It’s honestly not that bad.

@anemone @lucy @nemesis It's amazing that security goons in shithole third world dictatorships are consistently nicer and less abusive than security goons in the "bastion of the free world"

@arcana @lucy @scathach ireland and NH were basically going 20ft from the car to a building or vice versa, or just getting out of the car, taking photos and getting back in

@lain @nemesis @lucy @scathach That’s pretty rare to be fair and while I think free speech needs to be strengthened and by Rupert it will be, that’s generally when people have tweeted about burning down migrant centers

@arcana @nemesis @lucy I visited Egypt like 10 years ago when tourism was at an all-time low due to some terrorism scares (way out in the desert) and it was wonderful

@scathach@stereophonic.space @lucy@netzsphaere.xyz @nemesis@fedi.layer02.net even the people in the UK have been nicer in my experience despite having an equally insane process to the US

@scathach @nemesis @lucy I’ve seen that in Egypt these days they have “guides” that try to scam westerners. They should be buried alive with scarabs.

@nemesis @lucy @scathach Alright, well I’ve walked around at night then, in Newcastle in a city setting, and in the Yorkshire Dales earlier this year

@arcana @lucy @scathach I've walked in cities at night occasionally for practical reasons too. its just that I'd try to avoid it if possible

@arcana @anemone @lucy @scathach wdym? terrorism happens everywhere, and the TSA probably does very little to stop it

@nemesis @anemone @lucy @scathach Oh yes, I just mean in terms of Britain and stuff, the amount of terror attempts on Britain are insane. The way it's done here is much better than the US though. Most TSA agents seem like dumb third worlders in my experience.

@anemone @lucy @arcana @nemesis Modern America reminds me quite a bit of Russia 10-20 years ago, they're both effectively thirdie shitholes but look prosperous by virtue of living in the shell of a once great empire
