@mia @lucy it's Arch/i3 and I use the gimp in their repos aurashrug

it's a sunken cost thing: after 2y of having finally understood how Gimp works, I don't want to learn different tool sadcat

@icedquinn @lucy @kaia this tbh

if your software needs a splash screen you should backtrack and figure out where you screwed up

@lucy @kaia these days gimp is trying really hard to catch up with krita (it has layer groups, better color management and non-destructive filters now) but everything is janky and buggy and behaves in unexpected ways

Could it be loading some plugins from your home directory? I often use computers that are two decades old and 7 seconds is too much even by my standards 😅

@kaia The 10 extra seconds 4 beta needs to start on my ~4yo "gaming" laptop compared to good ol' 3.0.21.

UI revamps are never worth it.

Good for the economy though. Silicon engineers need to make things faster. Software engineers need to inefficiently add more features.

Everyone keeps their job. Collateral damage is the pleb consumers who burn out from having no free time and from paying for new hardware every year.

@m0xEE @kaia @lucy @mia if it's not just Gimp but any GTK program, and you have not session dbus active, it might be the timeout all GTK apps have to try and connect to the non-existent dbus.

@oblomov @lucy @kaia @m0xEE this basically only happens on systems that either don’t have systemd or use the reference dbus implementation instead of dbus-broker

neither of which applies to arch, afaik. it should set up dbus automatically as part of each user session

@lucy @kaia @m0xEE @oblomov i believe the connection timeout for that is also much longer
