@sun i never had a reason to hate either, but i only care about formats (i prefer avif in this case) long after i already started running linux full time

@sun webp is like if you made a really good car, perhaps the best car ever made by sheer technical standards, but it doesnt run on any commercial fuel and it's incompatable with roads

@sun webp is dated. its based off of VP8 from 2008.
lossy is forced 8bit 420 subsampling

avif is much newer and more efficient. supports 400, 420, 422, 444, sub sampling and RGB at 8 bit, 10 bit, 12 bit.

libaom is already much more sophisticated than libvpx

@RedTechEngineer @sun for the longest time they were incompatible with discord (support only being added this year) and im sure they still dont work with the steam chat client.

@Nudhul @sun thats not true, back before i got banned forever ago, webp did in fact work on pisscord, what got added recently was *animated* webp support. webp was supported as early as 2015 and i know this to be a fact.

additionally, i notice a common denominator of your examples being proprietary programs.

@sun I don't understand what your problem is. Browsers support them both. Image Magic does too.

@Nudhul @sun webp predates pisscord and steam chat, neither of which needed to exist as solutions like irc and xmpp already existed.

you literally have no idea what you are talking about and you are becoming hostile over it. what the fuck is your problem?

gee i wonder. maybe its this smug contrarian attitude that all linuxtards seem to share that just rubs people the wrong way.

@Nudhul @sun but am I wrong in pointing that out? proprietary programs do tend to have these kinds of common issues that free software programs usually don't.

@RedTechEngineer @sun why are programs like adobe photoshop and microsoft excell considered superior than their freeware counterparts, even by people who promote freeware? does anyone use GIMP for professional editing work?

@Nudhul @sun
>why are programs like adobe photoshop and microsoft excell considered superior than their freeware counterparts

i don't consider that to be the case

>even by people who promote freeware

I don't care what people who use free of charge proprietary programs think.

>does anyone use GIMP for professional editing work?

maybe? this it out of my profession. I don't know. enjoy your $200 subscription cancellation fee though.

anyway, you are being disingenuous, hostile, and overall thoroughly unpleasant in your erroneous beliefs of forfeiting freedom making you superior, this will be my last response here.

@RedTechEngineer @Nudhul @sun
https://purpleboard.net/forums/index.php for example
Note that I don't mind, I simply run
magick x.webp x.jpg
and done.
But there's a ton of places that do not accept webp. Tons. I just don't think it's a reason.
Attached picture is AVIF. Pleroma takes it.

@Nudhul @RedTechEngineer there's zero good free alternatives to adobe premiere, aftereffects, or illustrator. if someone replies with inkscape I will kill a kitten

@Nudhul @sun I don't understand this hate, I've never had issues with webp not being supported

Really don't like how it uses a single extension for images and animations though
