Let me tell you a story about a camp the school had us go to for a week in 3rd grade. (TDLR we had to run through the woods at night pretending to be escaping slaves)
overall it was a very normal camp, nothing note worthy other than 1 night time event they had planned.
When it started getting dark, the camp counselors had us in groups of about 10 and we had to pretend to be black slaves. An adult ran over and said we needed to make a run for freedom. He told us to get in his wagon and covered us with a sheet and we held bags of hay to hide behind. As we were wagoning through the woods (to freedom?) a white man stopped the wagoner and said he needed to make sure there were no slaves being smuggled out. Wellll the wagon was full of slaves! When the sheet got pulled off he shined his flashlight around and saw someone’s face. We had to run. We didn’t have any lights. We got chased until we made it to a cabin where another counselor hid us. When the white man came banging on the door he had us climb out a window and said to follow the road to the big barn (which was actually the camp cafeteria). The dirt road was filled with white men patrolling with spotlights. We had to stay out of the light and sneak our way down.
Along the way we lost many slaves. Some at the wagon, some got caught in the woods, some didn’t exit the cabin before the door got busted in, some got caught on the heavily guarded road. Only about 4 of us made it to the safe barn per group. (I think 1 wagon successfully made it without being uncovered).
