it may be unrealistic but if the steam machine isnt 499, it's gonna be a niche product for millennials with too much money who want a living room pc "just because" and nobody else.

@thatbrickster @hakui I'm a special case cuz I was able to make money by doing what nobody wanted to do here: linux administration. During apprenticeship everyone made fun of me for liking it. Linux being hated turned out to work in my favor (high demand, little to no supply). Only speaking for Germany here of course. Americans and the English just hire indians for that, probably.

@teto I've a family friend who works as a Linux admin for a payment processor. He's the only one at his workplace who can do what he does. Everything here is or was mostly Microsoft since they're considered the 'industry standard' with their government contracts and whatnot. Now they hire pajeets in their own country and outsource the jobs there, whether or not they still follow the paradigm of having offices in India, Europe and the Americas.

@thatbrickster @hakui all "important" infrastructure here is being moved to linux basically. So most linux jobs, if it isnt just some webhoster, are in the health/hospital, banking/payment processor, or military sectors. At least thats what my experience was looking for a job this month.

@thatbrickster @hakui I also applied for a job in the UK but they asked me about my race and my sexuality in the form. I've never seen shit like that in Germany...

@thatbrickster @hakui If I had stayed a windows 2nd level supporter i'd be making a third of what I am now. They offered me 2000/month before taxes and insurances after apprenticeship back in 2019 lol.

@teto Look on the brightside, thanks to it we're (probably) getting HL3 finally.

@Witch_Hunter_Siegfried @teto You just jinxed it. It's entirely, singularly, your fault.

@akai well I meant normie types. The "nerd-lite" ones who are globohomo-adjacent, love reddit. 4chan is just zoomers I think. Fediverse might be the last "bastion" of that old internet really. I wouldn't know where else to look for it. That said, obviously theres millions of globohomo millenials on here as well, but we never see them because they block all of us.

@Humpleupagus @teto @akai Same; I think telnet.exe was my first internet “browser”.

Some guy ran an 8 line dialup unix server where I lived. It was just a shell login. I used telnet, irc, etc from there.

@Humpleupagus @teto @akai Oh hey, did you ever encounter a website called Bianca’s Smut Shack ?

Questionable as it is, it lays claim to being the first actual web community. I’ve not yet encountered anyone admitting to having an acc’t there, in the wild.
