@allison @hj That is indeed the problem with proprietary recommendation algorithms. They are obviously tuned to optimize their “engagement” metrics to generate more profit above anything else.
A freedom respecting recommendation algorithm would instead be tuned for things that people might actually want, such as cultural enrichment.

No. I'm willing to bet money that some deranged autist will instead write a recommendation system that exclusively gives out furry porn regardless of any inputs and release it under AGPLv3 and this will be the only open source recommendation in actual use.
Though, you could probably call this "cultural enrichment" to some degree.

* Hacker News gets posted a link to the brand new content recommendation system, developed by a gay furry polycule (all she/her or they/them) and one random math nerd from Serbia, and licenced under AGPLv3
* The recommendation system is written in an obscure dialect of Common Lisp and can only recommend gay furry porn and sissy hypno, still gets some adoption due to the lack of alternatives
* Some users raise concerns about the kind of content it recommends, those are deemed unimportant, as the devs are busy rewriting the code in Rust (tm)
* A US DoD contractor adopts the system and floods developers with money, causing a massive falling apart within the community, half of which accuses the other half of being Nazis (tm) and Worse Than Hitler
* Reports claim that the system is being deployed to trannify children in Palestine. Forks are created, trying to mitigate this by inserting Palestine flags into recommendations
* The random math nerd is now a CEO of a consulting company specialising in deploying furry porn recommendations on premises for select customers (all DoD contractors)
* New reports claim that despite being subjected to trannification, Palestinian children have not received the source code for the modified copies of the system, contradicting AGPLv3 terms on the matter. Gay furry polycule threatens with a lawsuit.
