@coolbean it's pretty warm in our house because we basically have a giant greenhouse attached and the sun is shining again (rip in summer)

@snacks when the fireplace is off we hover around 14-16° which isnt that cold but it gets really fucking bothersome when its been like this for about a month straight

@snacks like this is basically equivalent to sleeping outside in mild spring/autumn but just every day and i dont have appropriate clothing to deal with it

@coolbean maybe get an electric heater for the bathroom

@snacks electric heaters are a very contentious topic in my family mostly because my mother is uh... how do i say this... stupid

@snacks same goes for fans in the summer

@snacks i honestly kinda loathe her for this. wants me to hang up a chandolier filled with incandescent bulbs but anytime i try to do anything for my own comfort its "OH BUT THE ELECTRIC BILL"

@snacks and at the same time we're spending like a hundred bucks every week or two on firewood

@coolbean does an electric fan eve drnaw double digit watts?
1

@snacks probably not. its literally an electromotor on ball bearings it literally doesnt get more efficient (aside from electric heaters which achieve perfect energy efficiency)

honestly im starting to want one of those diesel jet engine lookin heaters cause they're apparently also crazy effective

@snacks that reminds me ive got a wattage meter i can actually check energy consumption now and do the maths of how much this costs. im SO going to use this fan next summer im gonna fucking measure at the maximum setting and itll be like cents per day run

@coolbean producing heat efficiently is so easy that 100% is the bare minimum

@snacks in electronics literally the only form of wasted energy is heat

@snacks i remember last winter i used my graphics card as a heater while playing reforger. shit was PEAK (then i fixed the gpu fan which had worn out and the efficacy decreased sharply)

@coolbean if your fan draws enough power to be significant at over like 200w+ power draw than i'm confused it was still spinning
1

@snacks it wasnt the fan drawing power that caused the heat, it was the fan not spinning at the speeds it was supposed to and thereby not adequately cooling my gpu that caused heat
1

@coolbean but your gpu shouldn't draw more power when hotter (well, technically it does a bit but gpus are usually power limited)
2

@snacks no like

this was purely a "my gpu was heating my room" situation power draw doesnt matter cause heating was not its primary concern
1

@coolbean watercooling a gpu usually drops power draw like 10-20w

@snacks thats actually pretty neat

@coolbean but the fan being bad shouldn't make it nore efficient at heating your room

@snacks man idfk all i know is my room didnt get warm anymore after i fixed it

@snacks note that i refuse to water-cool regardless. watercooling is cringy gamer shit in this household we use HEATSINKS like REAL COMPUTERS

@coolbean i enjoy pushing all my sliders to max while still drawing less current than stock at lower temps while being so quiet i can't tell if my pc is on

@snacks i want to be able to hear when my computer finishes compiling something from the other room

@coolbean do you know about the rajintech morpheus?

@snacks thats the aftermarket gpu cooler for 120mm fans, right? i want one of those

@snacks like literally my only problem is its bigger than a regular 2 slot gpu cooler so i cant fit it in most sff cases
1

@coolbean yeah, but i'm not even sure if it's mich better than the latest 3-slot monstrosities

@snacks probably not but it has vibes ya feel me?

@snacks i wanna be able to carry my pc in my backpack

tbf my backpack is now a 50L austrian army pack so my options have expanded but like yea

@snacks like idk just being a plain heatsink covered with 120mm fans is awesome

@coolbean tbh, a lot of my adversion for sff stuff comes from watercooling, but overall working in these tiny cases is a pain just for some novelty

@snacks way cooler than the stupid gamer shrouds anyway

@coolbean cramming enough cooling for a high end gpu and cpu inside a itx case quiet enough to mine ethereum next to my bed was cool tho

@snacks idk maybe someday ill have a desk where a full tower isnt just fucking obnoxious and in the way

@snacks i LOVE having an entire part of the underside of my desk blocked off

@coolbean 2 240mm rads, pump integrated into the waterblock, no reservoir. I had to cut and hammer some pieces because the crossflow rads where slightly bigger than standard and i needed them with the tiny fuck pump

@snacks @coolbean 4U rackmount. no GPU sag, good front-to-back airflow, water cooling rad + pump can be mounted externally (did that after taking the pic), enough space for HDDs in the same case, basically becomes a piece of furniture

@mia @snacks I WANTED TO DO THAT A FEW YEARS AGO

@mia @snacks but couldnt afford the hardware on account of: being really overpriced if ur not literally out there at the auction of whoever is liquidating the failed startup

@mia @coolbean watercooled gpus don't sag anyway in my experience tbh. Need to revice my monster rad in case project

@coolbean @snacks wdym those cases are cheaper than a decent full tower and the lack rack starter kit costs like 15 bucks

@mia @snacks ur hurting my feelings rn by acting like knowing that this specific ikea table has the right dimensions for mounting this stuff in is just self-evident and universally known

@mia @coolbean this rad used to be inside a custom plywood case but that needed a riser for the gpu and risers are fucky

@mia @snacks as for the 4u chassis... i dont buy high quality towers lol. my current one was 15 bucks on ebay

@mia @snacks but now that i know i dont have to buy those ungodly expensive purpose-made racks im in a much better position for this

@coolbean @snacks @mia a lack rack is the height of fashion, but also there's no harm in just having it sit on the ground on a few standoffs like https://www.printables.com/model/189445-4u-server-case-floor-stand-feet-vertical-horizonta

@mia @snacks note: i do still think that rack mounted hardware is overpriced though. part of why im interested in mini-rack stuff. its small enough to be feasibly 3d-printed
