I’m going to say it again.
Despite Google being Google, Sailfish OS contains more proprietary software than Android does.
Do not buy the new Jolla phone. Going from Android to Sailfish OS is a downgrade in terms of your freedom!
@SuperDicq and GraphineOS said their phones are less secure than AOSP
@lax I don’t know if that is true. I don’t trust anything that Daniel Micay says, he is an idiot that somehow has a cult following.
@snacks I don’t think AOSP will be abandoned.
If Google ever stops developing it I’m sure the community will simply take over because the userbase is huge.
I don’t know what you mean with “more compatible with regular linux”.
Did you mean that Sailfish OS is GNU/Linux, as in it is more compatible with desktop GNU/Linux because it is actually a GNU OS unlike Android?
@SuperDicq 🤷🏻♀️ unless a 3rd party debunks what GrapheneOS says, I'd say they're the most credible source rn
@lax It’s not really “they”, it is one person who says all these things on the GrapheneOS social media accounts, which is Daniel Micay.
I’d say they’re the most credible source
Why? What gives him credibility?
@snacks As long as it works on a 10 year old version of Wayland that Sailfish OS comes with due to their stupid proprietary license, then yes, I think you can.
@snacks But running desktop GNU/Linux applications probably works much better on something like PureOS or Mobian I can imagine.
@SuperDicq buy a used pixel and install grapheneos . its literally the best way to use android nowadays .
@fiore No, it isn’t. For an actual pragmatic solution (so excluding Replicant as that doesn’t support most devices), I think the best thing you can do right now is use LineageOS.
@SuperDicq ig . im talking about a good minimal google-stripped version of android . as much as u can hate it , graphene is actually the nicest android experience ive ever had
@fiore LineageOS is a more minimal google-stripped version of Android than GrapheneOS is.
@snacks PureOS supports all of the device’s features perfectly on the Librem 5.
@fiore I own a Fairphone 3 with LineageOS. It works very well and I would recommend it to anyone who needs to have an Android-based phone.
@fiore I used to like the N900 back in the day but it is unusable as a phone nowadays because it doesn’t support the 4G or 5G network.
@fiore Also there’s no need for PMOS, there is also a community fork of Maemo called “Leste”. I have also used Leste and it works pretty well.
@fiore I did run Leste on a Pinephone though, not on a N900.
@SuperDicq i just need it to connect to a caldav server . idont even rlly need a graphical session on it
@SuperDicq @mirq it is technically true but in the worst way possible, it's like saying a wall phone is more secure than a mobile phone because it doesn't have no OS nor apps to begin with.
@lax @mirq Also people should understand that this type of definition of “security” should never be the main concern when choosing what software to use.
Most of these so called “security issues” that people like Daniel complain about are either theoretical and obscure attacks that the average user would never get targeted by.
As a normal user, you should be way more concerned about other things. Like anti-features and the power dynamics of companies, and of course freedom.
if Mozilla decides to shut the doors, someone will maintain Firefox.
This already happens by the way. Many Firefox forks exist today while Mozilla is still active.
Especially forks that already don’t rely on upstream, such as Palemoon, will definitely not give a shit if Mozilla goes under.
@phnt @GrapheneOS @snacks I think the fact that Rossman and Daniel are fighting with each other is absolute kino. Because I think both of them are really stupid human beings.
