Duolingo putting an apostrophe before possessive s. That's wrong right, i'm not retarded?

The word didn't even end in an s already

I swear i learned it as only shortened "is" getting an apostrophe before and possessive s only getting one after if there's already an s at the end of the word

Yes, 's is used as a possessive (OR a contraction.)

Tomorrow's date -> The date of tomorrow
John's bike -> Bike belonging to John
James' car -> Car belonging to James
