I don't get why people bring up the environment whenever there's talk of AI.. you're using a computer that probably lets out a bit of CO2.. stuff like folding@home helps with great research for the world but projects like that are very computationally expensive and therefore probably not so environmentally friendly..

computers at their core just aren't very good for the environment..

@kirby because attacks on environmental grounds are almost always simple extortion fees. You can get your data center portrayed as part of the green revolution and at peace with nature if you pay the right people's solar company enough to glue 4 panels to the roof

@kirby This is why we should nuke India to offset our carbon or whatever

@kirby possibly because most other computing activity is lighter on resources and useful to some extent while generative ai is pretty bad at anything serious.

@kirby ithink its just .. because the tradeoff isnt worth it ??? also , normal computing doesnt waste the amount and the type of resources that ai at this scale needs . i dont think a whole one thousand people that are big computer users will ever have the same water consumption as one single datacenter :P

@kirby data centers currently use up 4% of us electricity and the number is expected to go up to 9-12% with all the ai data centers currently in construction. Home pcs use so little power on average that i can't find numbers on it
