@kaia and you even have the german nationalism edition

@lain Get ready for 2300W GPUS, which for some reason are still using 12v instead of just getting an independent 220v PSU to solve the wire getting on fire issue

@nerthos @lain the wires catching on fire wasn't an issue until nvidia tried to cram all the power into one tiny connector. Also no clue how you're planning to fit a 2300W psu on an add-in card

@snacks @lain @nerthos 64gb of RAM is around 1k now lol

@snacks @lain Just make it fat, PSUs aren't even that big without the case. 4090 gpus are already super fat anyway. If you're going to waste 5k on a gpu might as well put $50 more towards a modified case

@nerthos @lain psus of that power are still more the entire size of a gpu. You need completely new case standards to have any hope of fitting that, current gpus already get bent by their own weight

@snacks @lain 2300W gpu already makes no sense but tell that to nvidia

@snacks @lain Also for bending:

@nerthos @lain the proper way would be upping voltage to 24 or 48v and using non-retarded connectors, but 2300w gpus can't be used by consumers anyway or at least it would need to be on a seperate breaker from the rest of the pc, which sounds like trouble for getting common ground

@nerthos @lain so ig seperate psu for the gpu anyway unless your home is just wired differently

@snacks @lain The REASONABLE way to go about it would be this:

However, good luck convincing the guys that spend 3k on a fancy looking glass computer (which will be the only guys willing to pay 4k+ for a GPU) to switch from that to industrial looking setups with several boxes and lots of cables

> pcie extender
Kill it with fire
Btw, we already had extra psus for gpus, both internal to the case and external but external was when less than 100w already seemed unreasonable

@nerthos @lain but then, your box also already exists for laptops

@snacks @lain PCIE extender is a hack solution but considering risers are already a thing and we're trying to make an atrocity work without catching fire, it's a somewhat reasonable solution. The box could just be attached to the side of the main case so the distance between the motherboard and the GPU box would be about the same as a regular riser.

External PSU but the GPU still inside would still be pretty bad for a simple reason: you'd create an oven. 300w GPUs already generate enough heat to raise the temperature of the other components. Separate box allows for a huge cooling unit that won't have any "how do I fit it in the computer" issues with engineered airflow. It will also suck clean air and not interfere with the cooling of the other parts.

We used peripheral boxes for cd burning units and a bunch of other things in the 90s, it's nothing new, the difference is that back then everything was a light beige rectangle and no one cared, that was already futuristic and cool enough. More boxes on your desk: more cool
