@snacks beech and oak its all beech and oak theres some other options but they're not suitable for lumber so they're not actively cultivated making them harder to get especially if they grow in, say, the uk or ireland (like ash and thorn)

@snacks just gotta find some fucking maple wood in the middle of an area mostly cultivating spruce

lowkey these forestry plots with evenly spaced gigantic spruces are kinda eery but also so awe inspiring because spruce grows so fucking big

@snacks probably at least not good for cultivation

@coolbean yeah, all the trees we cultivate for fruit are decent but the wood temds to be somewhat expensive because they're not cultivated for it afaik

@coolbean and everything we traditionally made bows of is actually only good for selfbows, what i wanted to build was bamboo hardwood laminate and you're limited to stuff that comes from america for some reason there. That's how i found out how amazing robinia is mechanically

@snacks honestly checking kleinanzeigen? plum seems really attainable actually its just not dried yet because plum is a bitch to dry so ill have to put a heavy finish on it once its done but its so pretty i need to

@snacks like 25 bucks for some freshly sawn sheets with the bark still on em and shit. 6 bucks shipping but its in the same region as me so picking up in person might be possible too

@coolbean was about to say you should look up how to dry it if you wanna buy fresh logs but seems you already do.
Complete logs are prob best if you want really high quality wood tbh since most commercial wood is dried badly and has cracks everywhere or cut in whatever way it fit in the machine

@coolbean but i didn't get that deep i to it personally tbh and was just hoping to find good planks somewhere

@snacks well ordinarily just leaving it somewhere shielded from rain and stuff for a few months does the trick but having heard how difficult it is to dry im thinking that behind our fireplace might be preferable. just leave the stuff sitting there til next year while i practice on lesser woods lol

@coolbean somw woods need to be dried fast, some super slow. Iirc some you even want to wax over the cuts so it dries as slow as possible

@snacks fascinating

ok i need to research plum wood drying then

@snacks yknow i shouldve expected that it needs super slow

recommended approach ive seen is seal the endgrain with paint or whatever and leave it sitting somewhere for 1-2 years

@sal @snacks no i just really want to do woodworking and specifically instrument-making and im not entirely convinced that the exotic woods from south america, africa and india commonly used in instruments are grown sustainably and ethically (and in any case i find shipping lumber for thousands of kilometers kind of weird and wasteful)

@sal @snacks apparently the most attainable hardwoods here are all fruit trees so lumber isnt very easy to get but raw wood is just yea, turns out drying plum takes like one year for every 2cm of thickness and you need to make sure you seal the endgrain or it dries too fast and cracks/warps

@sal @snacks turns out sometimes people need to cut down trees in their yard and just sell their wood on kleinanzeigen. i found raw plum wood from my region almost immediately. 25 bucks asking price which seems more than fair for 4 pieces of raw lumber 60cm long each
