im genuinely convinced that the "species" canis familiaris is a complete cope. its just a catchall term for every domesticated canine ever even when those are considered different species in the wild

completely different body structures, completely different types of fur (length, presence of undercoat, curls in some cases) different kinds of ears (large and small, floppy and not) different tail proportions (some are really long others barely exist) and coloration. hell different prey animals in every fucking aspect the domesticated dog covers the entire fucking spectrum of canine. canis familiaris is a complete fucking cope

and yes, that means there totally is a breed of dog that should be classified as a coyote and in this ted talk i will explain why its the chihuahua.

@coolbean all that still just makes them subspecies as long as they produce viable offspring with each other and not proper species or not?

@snacks wolfdogs. canis lupine can produce viable offspring with canis familiaris and im willing to hazard a guess that its similar with other species of wolf or coyote

@snacks hell if we want to stretch definitions somewhat horses and donkeys can interbreed and produce a chimera with the best qualities of each the only part that stretches viability in the slightest is mules cant themselves then produce offspring

@snacks lions and tigers have produced offspring but those are infertile too

not wolfdogs though. further proof that canis is maybe like two species, three tops

@coolbean yes, canis familiaris is considered a subspecies of at least canis lupus. I'd have to look up coyotes

@snacks different species but im 100% certain they can interbreed like 100%

@coolbean well, and having the same chromosome counts afaik

@coolbean but that distinction mostly matters for plants

@snacks thats where mules fall out of the race the whole reason they're infertile chimeras is because horses and donkeys have differing ones

@snacks basically as far as i can tell taxonomists dont care if they CAN produce offspring they care if they DO

wolves live in totally different social structures from dogs and themselves dont really intermix due to a mix of geographical access (north american wolves arent gonna interbreed with european wolves) and differing habitats (wolves used to the rocky mountains probably arent that interested in travelling the great plains)

@coolbean there's definetely areas where wolves and dogs naturally interbreed. Read some stuff about that recently but don't rember where
