is there a particular reason why people in 2077 can't build isolated systems that aren't connected to the global network which is infested by rogue ais? It's almost like everything is made to be an interconnectable mesh which must stay online (and be compatible with old network standards) at all costs just for the sake of netwatch continued existence.

just in case: I only played original game, no phantom liberty and no tabletops.

@snowy getting everything back connected was a massive effort iirc

@snowy after the ais went rogue it was just small isolated subnets

@snowy could also be mixing stuff up but that's my recollection

@snacks but they are not physically isolated, but rather virtually (blackwall).

@snowy everything that was still working was physically isolated. They wanted a global network back because that's obv how it's most useful. Dunno why they had to reuse old infra that the ais have access to. Ig blackwall was cheaper/easier than laying new fiber

@snowy the seas are basically impossible to sail for example. Any ship on opem seas is a giant military undertaking because everything's full of ai mines

@snacks @snowy the whole "network collapsed because of rouge ais and we need a firewall instead of cut the cables"

@Jain @snacks @snowy the thing is some factions don't want it separated. i.e. voodo boys want to break the blackwall completely freeing rougue ais, militech wants to gain the control over them, and nus uses their own netrunners to pull out any data they can from there

@Jain @snacks @snowy there's also a theory that the most powerful people garry the prophet mentions as 'blue eyed' are rogue ais in human enclosure. whole quest from peralez is about rogue ai having the control over the goverment with mind control techniques

@snowy Hahaha in real life we would never build a world wide interconnected global network and connect literally every single device on it using outdated network protocols for absolutely no reason. Imagine who would be so stupid?

@snowy same reason we apparently can’t just build an internet without google anymore, and why even public services are increasingly getting inaccessible to people without a smartphone that can run android or iOS apps. or why the US can’t have nice passenger rail.

when some technology turns from convenience into majority lifestyle, people tend to build everything under the assumption that it will be sustainable forever, and its existence becomes firmly enmeshed with the systems that society runs on.

unplugging from the net means unplugging from society, and that’s terrifying. you are perfectly healthy as a human being, but a weak and retarded blob of meat as a member of a cyborg society. and, as we see with current-day america, keeping the masses in a state of constant terror by making them feel like it only takes one bad day for them to ruin the rest of their lives ensures that revolutionary thought will never fall on fertile ground.

@snowy what happens instead is that people turn to fast-acting drugs to rid them of their disease. and authoritarian dictatorship is one hell of a drug.

@snowy@suya.place ais are super humanly intelligent and can easily reverse engineer any new wireless network technology and hide nuts of themselves all over any networked device. Even if you were to build a new completely air gapped system and give up on wireless all it takes is one bit of an ai to get in and spread all over
