@binkle @azure hardly! that the pre-colonial peoples (i hesitate to say native, /pol/ told me that designation belongs to vikings) of america are called "indians" too is part of the middle school curriculum. we are taught -- or at least, were when i was in middle school, so circa 2013 -- to call them "red indians" as distinct from "black/brown indians" i.e. us. we are also taught alternative terms, of course (amerindian as opposed to indian, feather indian as opposed to dot indian, native american as opposed to indian) but the emphasis was on the term "red indian."
