@whirly because the vocabulary is more similar and you don't have to learn a writing system or is the language actually simpler?
Japanese is a stupidly simple language but learning it is still hard...

@snacks @whirly russian's writing system is really easy to learn, and I learned it as if I didn't grow up in a russian household because you don't overhear people writing
I'm not sure what of spanish would make it easier, japanese grammar is far easier than russian but the writing system more than makes up for it

@snacks @whirly cyrillic is honestly fairly trivial to learn (source: i did when i was like 16), thats not a great degree of difficulty. additionally coming from a mostly germanic background romance languages are still fairly dissimilar so i think i have at least some weight when i say spanish is definitely easier

@snacks it’s all around easier. Cyrillic isn’t terrible to learn but i obv don’t have to go back and be like “what’s this letter sound like again” for beginner lessons. Pronouncing and hearing words is easier. Sometimes I can’t hear Slavs say my own name in a sentence or only pick out easy words like eta lol
Then there’s the actual words. You can basically guess what a sentence in Spanish is saying??

Anyway I still think Spanish is ugly and Russian is way cooler and hotter.
