@phnt @p the first one wouldn't be weird if it didn't treat 24 separately from 23

second one is a bullet voting risk

@phnt @p its really funny that they call federated blacklisting "reputation data" and also mention EU law, because EU countries like france actually ban the practice of blacklisting. whether that's been transferred from the professional contexts to social media i'm not sure has been tested, but the french have told me it's explicitly not allowed for companies to do that.

even just storing lists of complaints about doctors is iffy.

@PurpCat @phnt @p @romin matrix is at least technically federate-able even if the protocols a trash fire. i'm not sure why people let atproto get away with claiming it is.

it isn't, it's just a neotwitter API.

@icedquinn @p Blocklists could be seen as discrimination in some sense, so it hold some water, but these organizations and federated blocklists efforts are also funded by the German government, so not like it would get prosecuted according to law. On a similar note, if some Mastodon instance grows large enough according to EU'S DSA, they will have to implement report resolution notifications for users, which the DSA mandates for platforms of certain sizes. And I can imagine that the people advocating for this wouldn't like the reported user to know they've been reported and what for, basically leaking reports to reported users.

@phnt @p yeah that came up. the "block on vibes no appeals ever" mastodon't crowd are walking in to oversight that has explicitly negative opinions about this. they should be hosting in the USA if they want to be nakedly fascist.

@romin @phnt @p the world is very different now than it was 7 years ago. It was important to invest in an ecosystem that could be a real viable competitor to Instagram/Twitter as their censorship was getting out of hand. But then a competing centralized platform at $work exploded in growth and it was a better fit anyway as it provided some privacy/discoverability controls that weren't really possible on the fediverse. This is a post about OnlyFans.

>besides this iftas stuff smell like 'by committee'

It's just a non-profit grant money extraction scheme funded by the likes of Social Web Foundation, itself funded by Meta, XRP and more, operated by people that think Bsky is part of "Fediverse". It's just a new way of trying to centralize the Fediverse by using moderation, nothing less, nothing more.

> Next up, IFTAS itself, $384,375 in 2023, and then another $7,733 in 2024, but they spent $302,567 that year, per https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/932011167/202433169349303828/full .

https://fsebugoutzone.org/objects/55b92e72-d82f-4e9c-a730-34d09d071a99

Their funding is downstream of the NED. I do not think they forgot Pleroma exists; I think they do not like Pleroma.

> bluesky is a place to complain about how much you hate your life

That's about who's on it; the main issue is that Busky is architecturally centralized.

I am not certain how hard it is to modify what code exists to just liberate it from their DNS hierarchy and do a parallel network, but I have a suspicion that it's not actually a very good protocol or someone would be doing this by now.

@p @PurpCat @phnt @romin there's no money in it. the people who care about that are on fedi, the people who don't want to externalize as much cost as they can anyway.

companies are already used to accepting and coping with heavy upstream risk so they don't really care as long as it functions as a place where PR lands.

@p @icedquinn @PurpCat @romin The EU sponsored W social media is built on ATProto. It's possible to make it sort of decentralized, but the architecture is done in a way that makes it very hard and expensive. Also btw blocking bsky's content labeler basically disables moderation for you and earns you a quick account ban.

On a completely different note, W requires you to prove your identity via their W ID or whatever app that is supposed to be 100% anonymous, to even make an account. It's glowing more than feds on Xitter and 4chan.
2
1
2
@HatkeshiatorTND @p Do you realize that's exactly what they want you to do, so they can then show statistics about how racist people opposing their moderation centralization are? By doing that you are giving them more ammunition.

@phnt @PurpCat @p @romin authoritarians have been drooling over turning everything in to surveillance states. the whole "must have a government ID we control but we super duper promise through this intractible series of maths that this somehow isn't a tracking system"

like if its not for tracking why does it need the state ID at all

@phnt @PurpCat @p @romin as for atproto itself. the few times i looked over the spec there is nothing special about it. claude seems to think it CAN federate now, but there's still basically zero independent implementations. same problem as matrix where its federated on paper but every install is basically new vector's.

nostr actually went and did the thing, has servers, has clients, negentropy sync works and is pretty efficient. some nostr's use the separate in/outbox for logistical reasons but it didn't even require a protocol rewrite to do it, it's just a convention about how to send messages to people.

xmpp already did the thing but people really are severely allergic to XML these days.

there's really nothing interesting at all about atproto.

@kumicota @phnt They didn't ask for any mandatory identifying information. Last year I shat on their "Can we email you?" bit like "Fuck this why can you not talk over fedi" and this year the form allowed you to just say your fedi ID.

Their "Is my instance blocked?" service requires you to give them an admin token, though.

@kumicota @p It's very popular in the Mastodon™ crowd. I don't know who in their right mind would give admin access to a third party just to automatically manage a blocklist. Who knows what else they query with those permissions. Just the fact that you need to provide that access to even see the full blocklist shows that they don't care about transparency.
