@anemone Hot take: GTA was never really that great. I can maybe understand at first with 3, the open worldness and it was the peak of the gansta culture crap, but nowadays? Pfft

@coolboymew@shitposter.world frankly, I think every GTA game kinda sucks. Impressive in many aspects, yes, but I never really found them much fun

@coolboymew @anemone GTA 2 was good. i loved splattering Elvises, cultists and making hotdogs out of bus commuters.

@coolboymew @anemone I loved the PS2 games, but once it started getting "serious" with 4 I lost interest.

@pettanko@tsundere.love @coolboymew@shitposter.world never played 2 but the controls in SA and 4 were so bad I never was able to spend much time with them. Especially since by the time 4 came out there were clones like saints row that had functional controls

@anemone @pettanko Pretty much. It's a collection of mediocre mechanism, with a mediocre storytelling, with mediocre missions

There's been 1432562 games that did the "But you can do anything***" open world thing better since, it just kinda was there "first"

***You can just randomly fuck around

@anemone @coolboymew Ah, well, I call them "the PS2 games" because that's what most everyone played them on, but I didn't have a PS2 so I played them on PC with mouse controls. So I actually can't really speak for how they played with a controller.

I did play 4 on console though, it still had the targeting system I think but it's been so long I don't remember well it worked.

@pettanko@tsundere.love @coolboymew@shitposter.world it was terrible lol, you had to like halfway hold the right shoulder button to aim but not lock on. also they wanted to make the car controls more "realistic" which in practice meant everything felt like you were driving on an ice rink

@coolboymew @anemone Yeah I don't disagree tbh, for me GTA was always more than the sum of its parts, each on its own was nothing special but I liked how they fit together. And by SA there was just so much.

I didn't play many of the clones. I had fun with Saints' Row 3, I've always heard 2 was great but I never got my hands on the console version until recently and the PC port was dogshit for years.

@pettanko @anemone Practically so much of "AAA" is semi or fully "open world", so I can't see why GTA is so special anymore other than just plain dumb franchise recognition and nothing else

@coolboymew @anemone @pettanko you can walk around city and drive random cars and shoot gun. Not that many games that fit this criteria somehow.
