@raccoon @fiore you can use soy sauce in basically anything. it's not magical asian sauce it's just liquid umami.

@tisanae @fiore this one however.... does your miso have wakame? wakame + basil sounds like a flavor/texture nightmare.

Recipes are not a suggestion and carbonara doesn't call for soy sauce or zucchini.
Can you make a pasta with eggs prepares in the same way you would for carbonara and add zucchini and soy sauce? Absolutely.
Is it still carbonara? Absolutely not.
Can it taste good? Absolutely.
"Oh I'm gonna make this thing but I'm replacing a third of the components and adding another completely unrelated componend."
It's not the thing you say it is anymore girliepop that ship sailed and sank!

@raccoon @fiore vro it's a goofy Troy reference chill.

the point is that if all you do is slavishly follow recipes you're not actually developing your palate or creativity. that's what cooking is about, not aping """authentic""" dishes.

You seem to be under the assumption that I don't make my own things and ONLY follow recipes to the book.
You are wrong.
I just don't say "I made a carbonara without the carbonara" and say "here, took inspiration from carbonara"
It's different.

Vegan meat too.
It's not meat.
Just because you call a pile of dirt a pile of poop it doesnt make it so.
They are both good for plants but they are not the same thing.
Just to be clear, I am not saying your food is dirt or poop I'm sure it doesn't taste bad.
What I'm saying is, I get triggered so bad when people call X an Y.
It sends me in a spiral it makes me go nut I dunno why it really makes my head go in a loop.
X is X and Y is Y
I love you tho sorry I'm made wrong

@bartholin @fiore @raccoon you wouldn't say "chili sin carne" that doesn't make sense. the classic dish is "chili con carne", with the chillis being the signature ingredient. if i were to make my chili con frijoles shortening it to "chili" is completely appropriate.

i don't know why i'm arguing this, i'm literally born and raised in occupied Mexico (south Texas). aren't y'all european? opinion discarded.

So your opinion about carbonara is also discarded?
But since you are mexican do explain if chili without meat is still chili, I am happy to learn from someone who actually knows.

@fiore the first thing i see in this thread (given the reverse chronological order) is someone saying they're muting the thread, then someone calling something retarded

it's the kind of quality discourse which is why i just went like "noted" the first time i ever saw someone use the "food" cw on fedi

@raccoon @rowb1t @fiore theres an underlying politics to the linguistics you are encoding which is that meat eating is the default and any attempt to deviate needs to be openly and overtly sensationalized as an imitation that cant pale in comparison. it reinforces the idea that the utopian goal of devaluing all meat is culturally and socially impossible. its not a neutral sentiment.

@raccoon @fiore @rowb1t people are naturally going to take issue with the idea that their delicious imposterdom must be specified and devalued as an unwanted alternative that needs it own name and place. most people really do just refer to anything vaguely chili shaped as chili. its kind of like saying 'yeah we have to call it soydog' instead of just saying 'well this is a hot dog and its also good'.

@Erato_Heti@social.xenofem.me @rowb1t@social.xenofem.me @fiore@brain.worm.pink
It IS neutral though. Becase if someone told me they made a dish that is traditionally vegetarian but they put any type of meat on it, I'd argue in the exact same way.
The only reason I am arguing meat here is that the original dish discussed was one that has meat in it.
I am not bothered by "this doesn't have meat". I am bothered by "recipe x has these ingredients and is prepared that way. If it's not done that way it is not X." regardless of what X is.
Example for a vegetarian thing, but not vegan, is pesto alla genovese.
If somebody told me they put meat in pesto alla genovese I'd tell them that what they are making is not pesto alla genovese at all.
Hell, if somebody told me they replaced pine nuts for walnuts I'd do the same.
People seem to misunderstand how I see this.
It's not a "meat good, veggie bad" type of thing.
I just get very bothered when someone calls pyrite a golden nugget and vice versa.
Why does it bother me? I don't know.
Would I like it to not bother me? Yes, very much so.
I can't help it. I am made this way. I tried to not let it affect me. And I even got better at it with time, it used to make me much, much angrier.
I feel similarly about fictional characters. If a character was designed to have black hair it bothers me if someone make the character blonde. I like it when something established is the way it is. It has been established that way, changing it and stubbornly calling it the same way is chaos.
Why am I like this? I don't know. Trauma? Autism? Room temp IQ? Those are all possibilities.
I don't like it. I can't help it. I. Can't. Help. It.
I tried. I did.
Please don't make it sound like I am just making it a political statement against vegetarianism because that is not the case.
I am stupid. I was born wrong and I grew up even worse. I can't help it.
I am sorry.

@raccoon @rowb1t @fiore i dont think it makes you stupid or anything like that because being that word anal nessecitates you also have to be very interested in keeping track of multiple types of classifications. learning different ramen, pasta, and sandwich names and going through them like yellow pages in a conversation.

its not necessarily bad but it seems like you would run at a mental impasse if you didnt know what something could be particularized as. on top of that i really dont think 'x-inspired' is a good idea in general. if you dont want to call something without meat a chile thats fine but there has to be a distinct pinpoint for it 'salsa dip' or something like that. at the end of the day this is all human crafted inventions bounded by human words, and you spend an awful lot of time tracing roots too much with this mindset. it seems exhausting and also like youd be in a bad place with information holes. but the rooting for authenticity in food would make you a great mind for finding a resturant to eat at.

the real issue is that you seem to have some sort of self esteem issue from how people interface with your social norms. i think theres a respectable logic to this on the basis of cultural appreciation and memory. you shouldn't be so hysterical with yourself.

@Erato_Heti@social.xenofem.me @rowb1t@social.xenofem.me @fiore@brain.worm.pink
I don't know stuff like the yellow pages, I'm not good at memorizing things, I wish (but lowkey it's better that I can't so I don't get stubborn about more stuff :p).
I usually go on the base of what I have learned about something, if I come across something I don't know anything about I don't say anything.
I am sorry for the crashout, I lost it when it turned political when it's all just about definitions.
I lowkey wish I could unlearn the specific meanings of stuff I have in my head to make things less annoying.
To put a more pleasant end to the conversation, just know that I respect vegetarians and vegans and my issue is not at all with vegetarianism and veganism.
I also encourage everyone to experiment in the kitchen, it doesn't matter if you take a recipe and change things. We agree to disagree on that and we will use our preferred names for stuff, and that's ok.
I hope the rest of your day is beautiful.

@raccoon @fiore @rowb1t youre undermining yourself by thinking a basic explanation isnt perfectly sufficient is my point. youre doing something i find to be concerning in a lot of people these days by self pathologizing. you dont have to. youre not nessecarily hostage to yourself. as you said you used to be so angry about these things but you arent any more because you learned that getting angry doesnt do anything. the mind can be negotiated with and you should be more fair with it to do so. theres no need to self limit.
