Dawn of the Machine is available as a free update for Quake
Cool, let me install right away!
on XBOX Series X/S, XBOX One, Microsoft PC Store, Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2 (via backwards compatibility), and Nintendo Switch versions of Quake.
That’s not the version of Quake that I own…

What kind of a fucking moron are you if you buy Quake on any of these proprietary platforms?

Quake is free software.

@SuperDicq there would probably be a reupload

@hj If it can even be backported if these platforms don’t use a proprietary version of the engine with custom bullshit not in the GPL version.

@hj People will probably find a way eventually though.

I just think it is extremely false advertising if you say “We updated a 30 year old game” but you didn’t actually update the original version of the game for people who still own the original copy.

@SuperDicq I mean that's their preferred distribution way. Romero was selling SIGIL on his website (with alternate streamed soundtrack, basic version with midi soundtracb was free)

@SuperDicq assets are not free tho.

@hj That is acceptable. Nonfree assets are just inconvenient, not unethical.

@SuperDicq makes me wonder if there's freedoom kind of thing for Q1. Either way, when buying quake on those platforms you're paying for the assets, including the new additions, stuff mos likely work on other ports.

@hj Have fun extracting the assets from a fucking Nintendo Switch or something equally handcuffed

@SuperDicq nintendies BTFO. I can extract stuff from steam release just fine.

@SuperDicq Well sure the game ENGINE is free, the software is, not the contents of the game itself 🙄

@ube If I could pay for just the assets in a DRM free zip file or something I would, but now they won’t get my money.

@SuperDicq @ube steam release assets are DRM free AFAIK, maybe game itself is, too, I didn't check.

@hj @ube Yeah but I have to install Steam to download it which is unacceptable for a game that is supposed to be free software.

@SuperDicq @ube you can download assets with steam and just use your own port obtained some other way. In fact some ports (eDuke32) explicitly search your steam directories for said assets.

@SuperDicq @ube Doom + Doom II is also on GOG, dunno if quake update is there as well. That is, if you think it's ethical to give money to slimy lying bastards who are all talk.

@hj @ube More ethical than Steam because at least the games are DRM free on there and a direct download without a client required.

@SuperDicq But that's not under a free license. The assets are proprietary! How dare you not play truecombat 1.3 with me on the Quake 3 engine! Found at truecombat.net or https://web.archive.org/web/20260607203905/http://truecombat.net/ (the site sometimes like at this moment gets broken for a while, and then gets fixed eventually, and the admin gets shocked there's even one person left on the forums to thank him for that, it's really cute tbh ><)

@SuperDicq @ube DRM is optional on steam you know, it's up to developer to implement it or not. Client - yeah, inconvenient.

@SuperDicq @hj
It's based on the Nightdive Quake Port, they had some physics sillyness in the first retail versions so idk how much effort backporting would take in regorts to difference to the GPL code. I'm sure it'll eventually happen as a community effort, the question is when.
Also Nightdive Quake + OG Quake (they're sold together) are available on gog.com so you don't have to deal with DRM or unfree clients to get the files, unless you count non-free javascript on the web shop and payment processor perhaps

@SuperDicq @hj But steam is nice and convenient, and it is free software. Doesn't cost a dime, only the games do. I was telling @Suiseiseki about this not to long ago, but he didn't believe me that yes, steam really is free software. Doesn't cost anything.
And again Quake is equally as free as steam or anything else, in fact less so, because it costs money. But it does have a free engine just proprietary assets, so it balances out to free.

@hj @SuperDicq And the steam DRM when enabled is intentionally kept weak and trivially easy to break but they have to support some kind of DRM for contractual purposes IIRC.

@ube @hj Steam is huge and they are a private company. At this they could just say “We won’t allow DRM of any kind” and other companies would simply oblige. But they don’t because Valve is greedy.

@ube @SuperDicq I think you can download some game content with anon user with steamcmd but not entirely sure.

@ube @hj Other companies always have “But shareholders decided” as an excuse to be an asshole but Valve doesn’t have that excuse so that makes it worse in my book.

@SuperDicq @ube I don't think it would be good, it will just resurrect shit like Origin and uPlay, and make those companies use worse kernel level DRM. Allowing DRM is just more freedom for the gamedev. As I said - it's optional. Makes me laugh when a game is DRM free on GOG but uses steam "DRM" on steam. Kinda defeats the whole goal of GOG now doesn't it?

Oh and since we're on topic of GOG, isn't GOG galaxy practically required for some game functions to work?

@SuperDicq @ube valve's winning strategy is "win by doing nothing"

@SuperDicq @ube I dunno either, but I also remember scandal that hitman on GOG had some stuff locked away behind online DRM or something. As I said - GOG is all talk.

@hj @ube I’m not really defending GOG. It’s still a proprietary software store after all. I’m just saying it is only a bit better than Steam.

Steam has this weird cult following for some reason, just for being less bad than Origin or Uplay or something? Steam is actually terrible unethical platform.

May I ask in what?

@kumicota @hj @ube One of the world’s largest proprietary software distributors that enables DRM and spyware? Not to mention it is also a giant gambling platform.

@SuperDicq @hj So? Genuinelly whats the problem with that? Not all would oblige, and it doesn't matter anyways, it's intentionally weak, documented as such, trivially easy to break, and it will have exactly the same copyright protections with or without the DRM. Literally changes nothing in practice except an extra little step. If you're consuming proprietary games anyways, whether or not you have to run a quick tool to strip the drm which will never improve and actually work as drm does not matter. You're position is less rational to me than stallman worshippers like suiseiseki, it doesn't make any sense. Wouldn't you be against DRM for what it does, not just for something that intentionally fails at doing that technically falling under the classification? For any practicality, it is not DRM, it's only a technicality that shouldn't matter. And do you really think the few publishers who demanded some kind of builtin DRM to release it wouldn't just release it elsewhere with worse real DRM if they were told no? They wouldn't be refusing to publish without it otherwise, be happy some extra games got made available with a fake DRM you can easily trivially break. You're simultaneouely dogmatic about technical definitions of things that don't have the problems you're disliking the category for, while also throwing out dogma and giving up on your principles to play propretary games and just not caring about the assets for some reason. It feels hypocritical, and this kind of thinking doesn't make sense to my brain. I can't make sense of it, I can't understand it. My only conclusion I can draw from this is that your are deranged and probably have a cluster A personality disorder. I don't understand you, at all.

@ube @hj I don’t really play proprietary video games anymore.

@SuperDicq @hj @ube I don't see enabling DRM as unethical but steam is one of the few platforms that doesn't ban you for using 3rd party clients and you can use steamcmd to download games and more without needing a lot of bloat

@SuperDicq @ube I think steam is true neutral on the alignment chart. They seem to care for their actual customers more than anyone else and everything else they do is rather free.

They could have made Steam Deck and Steam Machine completely locked down handcuffed platforms like switch and PS, but instead those as open as any other modern PCs (yes I know about handcuffed CPUs). They sponsor open software and do get open-source some of their own stuff I believe.

Many fail at these simple tasks miserably, Valve simply has to be slightly better than others and do what their users (and gamedevs) want.

@SuperDicq @hj @ube but the gambling and forced price parity I agree it's bad and unethical

@kumicota @SuperDicq @ube I think price parity is fine, as a customer I don't want to be forced to pay more or less depending on the platform/website. You can sell on itch.io for steam price and give 0% share to itch if you want.

@hj @SuperDicq @ube I'm fine with it too but I understand that it can be considered unethical

@SuperDicq @hj @kumicota Nothing wrong with gambling. I'm not aware of steam being spyware unless you mean the optional process monitoring to share what you're playing or something? And they don't enablr DRM, they provide an intentionally broken DRM shim that doesn't work as DRM intentionally, and tbeyond that any real DRM is up to the developers and not steam, and I think they list pretty clearly when it's used IIRC. The companies using it would not list on steam if not allowed, they would go on alternative stores like some already do. DRM is more important to the big entities, so it's therefore not enabling but rather tolerating, and it's up to you the consumer not to purchase those. Simple as that. I don't see anything unethical with steam at all, except for the clause that the game cannot be listed elsewhere for cheaper, which seems pretty minor and not a big deal all things considered. I just find it annoying they take the endless store profits and don't work on their games as much anymore because of it. But I certainly wouldn't call that unethical, merely, annoying to me.

@kumicota @SuperDicq @hj @ube I like Steam because it makes gayming in my shitty open source operating system easier and I don't give a flying fuck that it is not "libre" software or that it exploits drooling retards with knife skins or whatever.

@hj @SuperDicq You don't have to extract, just copy the folders from the re-release folder and open the mg3 from the mod menu on vkquake that works without any issue

@hj @Suzu @pettanko @ube @kumicota Another worthy mention is that you can play the Rance series (including Sengoku Rance, which I have a physical big box copy of) using the xsystem4 engine remake: https://github.com/nunuhara/xsystem4

@hj @Suzu @pettanko @ube @kumicota This is quite a big list of games that are eroge playable on natively on GNU/Linux using free software because of this: https://github.com/nunuhara/xsystem4/blob/master/game_compatibility.md

@SuperDicq @hj @Suzu @pettanko @ube @kumicota But does that engine support scripting?

A free interpreter/JIT doesn't make proprietary software executed in that interpreter executed free - the same applies to game engines.

@SuperDicq Plus like Steam as a store is barely even 20 years old, with all the other ones in the list being much more recent, so most of the copies of Quake have probably been outside of these.

And of course no other means to get Dawn of the Machine, even without the gratis status.
