if i had to speculate why aspies aren't a huge fan of the DSM recently vs other brackets

rearrangeing the deck chairs on ADHD, ADD, whatever insertion and removal of letters, doesn't actually affect the treatment and handling.

the deck chair rearranging on schizophrenia (separating DID/MPD/BPD/general schizophrenia) is narratively problematic (so much cultural baggage already involved in tying them as the same thing) but does correspond to "these were actually not related, we appropriately separated them"

the collapse of things in to "autism" doesn't quite do the same thing. it just collapsed the high functioning group in to the low functioning group and goes "they're both bad at talking to NTs, so it must be the same thing -> same treatment" and it's not, and a lot of the backstop on this relies heavily on the "asperger was a nazi" narrative. (nevermind there was another guy who wasn't a nazi, who discovered it sooner, you could have just renamed it to that guy)

communities sort of cluster by shared experience and "highly intelligent, too literal" doesn't really share a lot of experience with "non-verbal drooling on the floor,"

hopefully the practitioners do or push for re-partitioning to some degree because one group the treatment is "here's social skills training to talk to everyone else" and the other is.. so much more cooked

@dagda probably would not have been bad to district as Sukhareva and Kanner. Suk has the stronger academic claim legitimately and as a bonus wasn't an actual nazi.

(kanner mostly dealt with the low functioning cases)

For me, as someone that is aspie, I get a little frustrated that lumping me in with people with severe autism hurts both groups and allows for a sort of suffering olympics among some members of society

I work with someone who's son is autistic, and he constantly throws microwaves, breaks doors and flees from animals. While I can respect that some of the symptoms are similar (if only dampened), I also feel that he will be subject to people treating it like "My son is autistic and doesn't act like that", in a way that the classification of aspergers wouldn't

On the flip side, I require zero accomodations. I worked reasonably hard on myself to overcome some irrational issues, (which I understand many cannot) and it doesn't make sense that I am lumped in with a group of people that have an illness where they can't really look after themselves.

The last point that irks me are the "Actually Autistic" crowd. Trying to liken yourself to someone that cannot communicate functionally for something (i dunno, Clout, Sympathy) is in the same ethical ballpark as faking a broken leg and begging imo

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter. I only studied ASD for 2 semesters, so I don't know too much in the grand scheme of things, so an alternate viewpoint might help me not get so annoyed!

@lunarised they can be severities of the same thing but it was a monstrous to replace named subsections with the worst of the two labels and then try to add grades on to it. nobody in public goes "i have grade 2 high functioning autism" they say "i have PTSD"

Agreed and agreed. I'm not a huge fan of bright lights and loud sounds, but working in a amplifier shop for 4 years meant i just learned to deal (not that i'm suggesting that everyone needs to learn how to deal with it)
