we have until 2042 which isnt a whole lot but proxima fusion is aiming to build alpha in the 2030s so a big ol "lets hope that project happens on time" because burning fossil fuel is HILARIOUSLY stupid conceptually

@Primavera also the safety concern with fusion isnt *that* big. the worst you can do is quench the reactor which is a mistake so hilariously expensive i dont think anyone is letting it happen if that can be helped

like theres a reason sel4 was prototyped in haskell before the proper c version was written let alone validated

@fiore no but theres an ongoing project to like... turn the experimental stellarator of the max planck institute into something that can actually generate power. its a material sciences and design nightmare but its reached a point where the downscaled test reactor should be getting done in about a decade which is... huge as far as fusion research goes

like they have one a stellarator that works but much like every other design, this one can only run for very short periods of time lest it fucking obliterate itself

i just really need hopium, fiore. im like so fucking desperate to escape the clutches of the petrochemical industry within my lifetime. like i need to hold onto this if i wanna make it past 30 i think

@fiore @tisanae but yea im gonna be so real the engineering is cool as fuck. like they had to figure out how to bend a ceramic superconductor so they could wind the coils with it (and even then their solution only enabled bendiness in one dimension requiring even more clever engineering solutions which are currently under nda, im afraid) to let them wind their complexly shaped coils

@fiore @tisanae note: the reason they had to use a ceramic one is because its the only one we have right now that functions at up to 70 degrees kelvin which is... obscenely hot compared to the 4 kelvin limit of the coils on the existing stellarator at the max planck institute. like holy shit you can cool that with liquid nitrogen alone thats wild
