doom eternal runs at 90-120 fps on my laptop’s integrated gpu and that makes me happy

i already liked that game on a 60 Hz monitor but this changes things all the speed upgrades you can unlock are super fun when the refresh rate isn’t holding you back. they nailed the combat loop and encounter/arena design in this game. iirc people said they overdid it with the complexity and that feedback may be why The Dark Ages turned out so bland but this shit is like crack cocaine for my ADHD

@snacks you can also replay all the tutorials from the main menu and use the demon prison on the ship to practice if you don’t want to restart

@mia i get happy with at least 20 stable fps. i remember beating nfs the run with 15 fps and stutters on an amd a6-4440m laptop. i play wuthering waves at 1152x750 i think and get around 20-40fps.

i really need to get a macbook or a panther lake laptop...

@mischievoustomato zen 5 here. AMD is pretty much the best option for mobile integrated graphics. most of the benchmarks are done on windows but the linux drivers are WAY faster (up to 50% or something)

@snacks see i didn’t even get far enough to think about the finer points. i quit because of input lag, which has been a problem in every single unity engine game i’ve played regardless of settings, but very few other engines

despite how much i enjoy fps games, i’m not actually that good at them, and this is the kind of thing that makes them instantly feel frustrating

@snacks with doom eternal the controls are absolutely spot on. it’s also the only game where i don’t even need to adjust the sensitivity despite using a trackball because the defaults are almost perfect

@mischievoustomato oh actually, that 50% number? that was launch day performance. one major version of linux and mesa later it got another performance boost, between 1.3x and 2x with most games but a lot more than 2x for raytracing

it won’t reach 90 fps in those games but at least CONTROL and doom eternal are definitely playable with raytracing enabled on the radeon 880m. it’s insanely good for having a 25-30W power cap

yeah i know, i in fact got a ryzen laptop back in 2020 due to this, but i had to return to intel because there were a lot of issues with amdgpu bugs regarding hanging, crashing that came and went with each kernel update... eventually a bug that reduced my performance by about 50% https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/work_items/1455 I got fed up with it and my next laptop was a tigerlake one (with... soldered 12GB of DDR4 ram.. come on lenovo...), and my current one is an alder lake one with 24GB DDR4, 8+16 (8 soldered)

I would like to return to AMD but in my experience with the intel drivers have been more robust. I only have issues with one game resetting the gpu, but that's just one game. And the game is also bringing desktop gpus to their knees... so lol

impressive. i like pretty graphics but i havent had much hw so i've always had to make do.

@mischievoustomato the only amdgpu issue i’ve encountered so far is that Panel Replay (some displayport power management feature) causes the oled display in my laptop to stop refreshing. but i’m not sure if it’s actually an AMD bug or if the display just doesn’t support it properly even if it claims to because the driver already has a list of buggy displays where that is the case and the debug output makes me suspect it’s the display’s fault. either way i disabled that feature and it works perfectly. no stability issues or glitches, and i’ve already thrown a bunch of things at it that crashed intel and nvidia drivers before.

RAM is all soldered (32GB) but that’s justified (can’t have high-bandwidth LPDDR5 with DIMM slots).

come to think of it, every time i upgraded RAM in one of my PCs, it was already at the point where it no longer made much of a difference because everything else was so old, and i’d get a whole new mainboard not even a year later. so i really don’t care if that part is soldered or not as long as i can still replace things like the battery and SSD.
