@RustyCrab @binkle the government doesn't like to do it but it is definitely in the cards. it's not a huge deal because it's limited to 15% of disposable income, and if you're barely scraping by that might be a pretty small amount of money each month
the main consequence is your credit rating is raped for a decade. and if you didn't finish school, which is the case for a lot of people, you're totally screwed on getting more loans to finish. even if you qualify for pell grants you can't get them while in default, etc. it's a hard hole to get out of alone
a lot of people are in bad shape re student loans because they bet on the government forgiving their loans. that meant missing opportunities for getting out of default and refinancing and stuff because if they took those options, they would lose eligibility for forgiveness. dumb bet
