@cell keyboards are much cheaper unless you're talking about the instrument

@snacks @cell Don't underestimate mechanical keyboard collectors and their choices to buy $400 USD keyboard with clone Cherry MX switches just because they sound "squishy", "bubbly" or whatever.

> 400$
i mean i have two of those but they're like, endgame keyboards with special requirements. one of them is literally bespoke and the others a kinesis. if your hands haven't fallen off you don't need them. there's plenty of decent mechanicals for 50-200$ these days.

400$ is for like "i've exploded my wrists now i need something that looks like scifi rocket controls to live"

@icedquinn @snacks @cell Couple years ago there was an YT shorts scene of keyboard "collectors" making shorts about the various keyboards they have while describing them like audiophiles describe audio equipment.

I had some compilation of those, but can't find it now.

@phnt @snacks @cell yeah finding your favorite switches i guess. i use some funny ones (epomaker x leobogs) because 35gf is the lowest you can really get in a full box.

my hands are fucked to the point where 20gf chocs are basically medical necessities (incidentally, 20gf is also where the datahand and all the "typing for crippled hands" technologies settle, but a svalboard is 700$ god damn)

@phnt @cell @snacks if you want to be pragmatic about it there are places that sell tester kits. which are basically like, plastic boxes of 4x4 grids of switches, each ones different, so you can just kinda play around for the feel you like and then order a bag of those.

you can get hot swap keebs for like 50$ right now on bezos land. i've since replaced the box switches and caps on this one. (for example i no longer have a right function key, i have a right flan 🍮 blobcatthinkOwO)

@icedquinn @phnt @cell i'll never again get hotswap sockets. Have to beat the shit out of my keyboard every now and then to get rid of all the double clicking

@cell @phnt @snacks camera lenses idk you can spend a fortune on those but you only need like 2 of them really.

my BMPCC has a generic panasonic cause it went on sale, but before that i just had a speed lens. (the speed lens actually has extremely great light capture, but no zoom, which makes the camera hard as fuck to use. the panasonic has a limited zoom in/out, but it sucks more at lighting, so eh.) i dunno that i'd have gotten the BMPCC again in retrospect. my life was starting to do better at the time, so i was gonna actually do videos.

@snacks @phnt @cell you must have done something weird then. though the sockets do be rated for only like, ten insertions.

@icedquinn @phnt @cell i'd guess it's more the choc sockets being bad in particular

@snacks @phnt @cell i've never had that. BUT the marketing from the brands tends to suggest "oh just change them when you get bored." the slip sheets for the things are quite grim.

they're rated for *ten* insertions. its more that hot swaps let you get away with a single SKU with options than anything. that's why the bespoke boards like to use them.

@snacks @cell @phnt that being said these days i would be exceptionally happy with an arisu keyboard with 20gf choc pinks blobcatmelt2
