@snacks im looking at a neat little bed levelling probe mechanism trying to figure out if itd be compatible with an ender 3 or if id have to design my own parts to get em to cooperate

@snacks basically it uses a little compliant mechanism to add just half a milimeter of upward travel when the nozzle hits the plate and that upward travel then actuates a switch to let it know that in realspace its at z-0.5mm so it can tap the nozzle against the build plate to figure out the level which is so much less of a headache than a detachable probe that needs an attach detach process added to the firmware

also its literally like 1 switch and some wires so its like, cheap as fuck. thats also useful

@bea14s some of the contact based probes won't work properly with a sprung bed

@snacks thats the thing, this mechanism is the probe and your nozzle is the contact

@snacks its the same approach as the voron tap for what its worth though this ones called the … dab

@bea14s idk if it's an issue with all switch based mechanisms, but with some at least the bed is too soft and will give

@snacks i feel like that an entirely solvable problem though? like just reinforce the underside with a super thin aluminum sheet or smth

@snacks @bea14s tbqh i would not invest any more time or money into ender 3 mods unless you’re also the type who insists on running windows XP in the current year

@bea14s that's not gonna make the springs stronger

@bea14s the tap github basically tells you not to use it with any vorons that have sprung beds

@snacks @bea14s remove the springs and get a precision machined bed with its own AC heater on a solid-state relay, then watch the printer walk through the room from the moving bed’s inertia 🙃

@mia @bea14s ig yeah, you could mod the springs out and mount it rigidly actually

@mia @snacks look. its 50 bucks. for that price i couldnt even get the extrusions for a better printer at this rate

@snacks @mia ur right i hadnt even thought of that so far

@mia @bea14s they're only 24v actually, but they can make it jump around a fair bit before they start skipping

@bea14s @snacks iirc the vzbot has 48V dual drive (that is, in the back AND the front of the printer, for each axis)

@mia @snacks i do not value my time. also its for the memes. i enjoy troublesome little mechanisms

@mia @bea14s ratrig dropped the servos right?

@mia @snacks …what are they printing with? fucking tungsten reinforced nylon or something?

@mia @bea14s slapping an odrive with multiple hp electric motors on a printer sounds funny

@bea14s @mia it's for speed, what you print doesn't really matter for the movement system

@snacks @mia fair fair actually. i was thinking about torque which was the wrong type of power!

@snacks @bea14s don’t remember but the last ratrig i used i couldn’t max out because i only had PLA filament

the hotend cooling on the thing was VERY STRONG though and for a unit that large the resonances looked very very good so i bet it can go very very fast

@bea14s @mia no, still correct, they have to overcome inertia

@bea14s @snacks you can go super fast with styrene-based filaments

@bea14s @snacks i have a less capable (heavily modded, never ever go with the official BOM) voron 2.4 and that comfortably prints ASA at like 40mm³/s. the bottleneck is basically print cooling.

@mia @snacks god i wish i could afford to build a voron

@mia @snacks but yea ive seen the 0.Xs go stupid fast before and that was very much my first introduction to voron printers

@bea14s @mia mine is a lil v0.2. That's why i can make it jump around without completely ruining my prints

@mia @bea14s the one time i wanted to use one as a shitty server it killed the sd card in 2 days (was a decent one)

@snacks @bea14s i also briefly had an rp2040 toolhead before i got the chinese STM clone for CAN bus. rp2040 does not belong in enclosed chambers even with a cooling fan lol
