I'm only about half way through, but I definitely recommend it. More than anything, the story is actually pretty interesting. I think the worst part about the mainline SMT games I've played so far (Mainly 3 and 5, I haven't played that much of IV yet) is the story does almost nothing to draw me in. I think immediately trying to save the world rather than exploring the world that's already been destroyed is a lot more interesting to me.

The game play is pretty fun, and it's addicting to fuse and collect different demon's as is usual in SMT games, though it's not really very difficult (yet, at least). As I said, I only played a bit of SMT 4, but it kicked my ass way more than SMT Strange Journey has. The only times I've died have been to the first boss and when using auto-battle and not paying attention.

@yomiel yeah reading about it seems interesting. you play the standard or redux?
