@snacks what to do with all the gamers who don't do anything else and have no other interest? they don't even like IT in the first place, but since they sit on PC/console all day, their parents think that IT is a great career.

it's ruining their whole life, just because modern society does not let men do anything anymore, develop their interests anymore.

@kaia they should join military and become drone operators. Until we get neural networks for that in a few years (only held back by ethics not tech rn i think)

@kaia @snacks there's actual money in e sports now. if the current esports/streaming scene existed in 2007 I'd have made A milli playing halo

@vriska @kaia not enough for huge chunks of the population to make that a carreer

@snacks @kaia its no different in that way from other pro sports. You'd have a demographic that either gets extremely good or does menial labor. same as with football

@nerthos @kaia it's sad that a war would prob help alleviate a bunch of current issues for men

@snacks @kaia It's ideal because the best way to get real change is to get all the disenfranchised men to get actual combat experience and form strong brotherhood in the frontlines, a crusade solves the problem of states micromanaging deployments so that personnel can't develop their own loyalties. Countries would commit the best kind of suicide.

@kaia Of course, Bafög is short for Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz

@kaia @snacks hmm i actually got into tech overall and IT specifically long before i ever went to uni. But yeah it's probably valid that gamers gravitate towards studying compsci if they've never had a job and finished secondary school with decent grades

@snacks @kaia depending what kind of job you aim for, CS is still a good major. Especially networking and OT is in high demand in Germany. (and cloud to a lesser degree)

Why would men develop anything when their country is being destroyed and they can't even get a mate ?

Will be ran on the knoxNeuralNetwork app which is on almost all worldwide mobile computers.

@mangeurdenuage @kaia idk what you're trying to say here, that we'd need some crazy distributed supercomputer for that? Fruit flies have more complex behaviour than what's needed for this

@cell @kaia Oh, that makes sense. Here it's a club for people with IQs above 140. It attracts exactly the kind of insufferability you'd expect.

@snacks @kaia Onboard ML for simple area denial missions (fly search pattern in geofence, kill anything the classifier marks as a person or vehicle) is already trivial, more complex and open ended drone missions could probably be automated but I don't see that happening at scale because of the much higher risk of killing civilians and friendlies

@scathach @snacks @kaia
> killing civilians and friendlies

because that famously stopped Blackwater

@scathach @kaia most drone strikes right now could prob be executed with a waypoint mission close to enemy positions and then a small neural network that just identifies and flies towards whatever looks like military equipment/humans with some internal priorisation i think

@scathach @kaia just fly somewhere based on gps or slam

@snacks @kaia So just putting ordinance on a specific location?

@scathach @kaia yes, that seems to be what most suicide drones are doing. Just fly where you know/think there are enemies and strike them.
Or am i mistaken?

@snacks @kaia Wait I just looked that term up, apparently DJI already has the exact kind of basic autonomous behavior built in

@snacks @kaia For the most part suicide drones are ghetto artillery, the best tool for delivering ordinance somewhere is artillery hooked up to a small observer drone to get more accurate coordinates

@snacks @kaia @scathach they specifically have a number of non-GPS navigation modes, too. which is important cause a lot of GPS contains speed lockouts specifically so you don't use them on planes without paying the extra vigs.

DJI i think also has some involvement with secret blacklist servers. jones was talking about it some years ago when people tried to take pictures of the southern US border--when there were migrants there none of the commercial drones would let you fly anywhere near it, you'd just get slapped with a denial screen.

@snacks @kaia @scathach suicide drone seems like such a waste. that shits expensive and valuable.

at least use it as a mortar spotter or something.

Isn't it the same as in other areas of streaming: only top 10% get more or less sufficiently compensated, everyone else just uses it as a relief for living a life with no particular purpose?

@m0xEE @vriska @kaia
> top 10%
you're very optimistic about this

@snacks @vriska @kaia
True, that is a VERY rough estimate. I'm no longer in touch with people who do this, but I don't think the situation changed much. However there are dozens of popular games which can be categorised as e-sports, there are professional gamers who stream their online matches, they also have tournament prizes, some of them have advertisement contracts. Then there are people who stream the tournaments and provide insightful commentary — they also make some. Then there are popular entertainers who stream different games every time, who might also have ad contracts and make money on the side.
Overall they are not too few, but not many either. Even among the 10% the income varies strongly, some can consider that their primary source of income, some consider it a bonus — an opportunity to make extra to buy snacks and new games, but otherwise do it for fun.
But absolute most are either doing it for a few friends to spend some time together or are just wasting their time.

I believe it's more or less the same even in spaces like OnlyFans, this is essentially how this attention economy works: few success stories motivate a lot of people to do it, most of them end up doing it for free, and in case with OnlyFans destroy their mental health as a bonus. The latter isn't always the case — some manage to maintain healthy attitude towards it, others end up with it chipping off their integrity little-by-little, until they spin into a burnout and major depression, I've seen enough such cases.

@snacks @m0xEE @vriska @kaia its the zipf distribution. 1% of a given field are superwinners, 10% of a given field break even, the remainder are losers.

@snacks @kaia @m0xEE @vriska taleb talks about this ("extremistan") and how humans are notoriously unfair at allocation. when wages are tied to hours (most menial jobs) there's a relative flat average and high accessibility of reaching sufficience. when wages are decorrelated to hours (entertainment notoriously is) you get extremistan (extremely concentrated winner set who takes all)
