my immigration (mis)adventures continue. my work authorization card, and with it my driver’s license, expire in december, and it’s looking like it’ll only get approved and mailed to me in january, even though i filed for the renewal in may. so, i get to enjoy a month of unpaid leave (woohoo, time to dip into my savings. so exciting) with no transportation that i am still on the hook to pay for (insurance dgaf about my license situation and neither does the great state of kansas). and then once i do get my work permit, i have to fly to another state and renew my license, somehow convincing the tsa that its totally fine that my visa is expired and that i can fly on my ead. such an annoying cocksucking system on the best of days, and with the trump admin i’m SURE they’ll try to hold up my stem opt somehow, so i can’t even make arrangements to renew my drivers license and become human again

like in terms of immigration troubles this is such a first world problem because i can stay in the states while my application is being processed. but still! very annoying. try explaining to an american why you have to carry 5 different forms of id on you at any given time, some of which might look expired on paper but pinky promise they aren’t reeeeeeeally

@vriska i wish there was a bus or train from florida to kansas but i literally do just have to risk it. might as well use my credit card points i was saving up for a nice business class trip so i don’t burn actual cash if tsa denies me

@prettygood @vriska maybe to wichita or kc, not to the small town i worked at anymore. which is fine, luckily the kansas dmv doesn’t care which one you pick for your renewals. i could hoof it to hays if i really wanted

@noids @vriska @prettygood i don’t think anyone wants to be felt up by ice. if i had a choice between tsa and ice, id pick the tsa every day, what with all their fun secondary inspection rooms

@zonk @vriska @prettygood ice has been covering for TSA in short staffed airports, also cause most of them have nothing to do.

@noids @vriska @prettygood yeah i saw them “cover” tsa not too long ago. standing in the terminal in groups of 4-6, staring at anyone a shade darker than printer paper, while doing nothing at all to help with screening

@zonk I looked into actually working for USCIS when I was working for someone that handled their paperwork. You have to stay in Charleston, SC for five weeks as part of their training. If you have a life, you're not signing up for that job.

@zonk don't know what your state law is, here in AK, drivers licenses are 'valid' for 30 days after the expiration date (cause government doesn't known or care what words mean 🤷‍♀️)

@nicholas is it like actually legally valid or is it “you can drive 10 miles an hour over” valid

@mrsaturday but yeah i get what you mean. it’s not even one of the fun kcc jobs i imagine, just lame paper pushing with way too much responsibility. and you can’t even be european and take bribes

@zonk

Hmmm, not sure. DMV lady defiantly told me this once. Maybe the law changed or maybe it's a wink and nod situation, but after looking up the code it's only true now when your license expires on your 21st birthday (they always expire on your birthday here) and then it's a 90 day window 🤷‍♀️
