eventually the EU is gonna ban all options for manual direct data transfor onto smartphones, like usb or sdcards. why? they'll argue it enables piracy amd malware. the vast majority of users will use google's/apple's cloud storage stuff so it literally won't affect them. the majority won't complain. that way they're gonna have the private data of whoever still managed to resist up to that point. tech is doomed.

@snacks @lucy
I think I've heard something similar.

Also that's why digital cameras have arbitrary 30 minute video limit.

@newt real. what skill would it take to abolish the eu tho. they're notoriously German so they will continue to seek control of everything. snacks said it yesterday, germany is the most autistic country ever.

@lucy then again, given that the median age in Germany is 48 years old now (almost 50 for females) and might just reach 55 in a couple of decades, there soon won't be much of a Germany. It's not even a country, it's a retirement facility with slave labour masquerading as a country.

Seriously, try to realise this for a second. The majority of Germans cannot have children because... they are too old! And those in the age bracket of being able to do so just refuse, either because of the tax load or because they are following your suit. I think, the problem of Germany is solving itself just nicely. All we have to do is keep some distance.

@lucy @joey oh that would be a different cancer, don't worry. EM radiation causes all kinds of tumours, your pills won't help.

Btw some 80 years ago Germans invented an almost instant method for giving someone cancer by applying high-frequency currents. Works like a charm, can give you cancer of literally any part of your body. So, if you have electrodes sticking out of you, I'd be worried.

@lucy And killing the laws that mandates unified plugs for charging? Definitely a skill issue.

According to some random site quite mane have 30min limit but not all

https://www.recordinglimits.com/

Some random blog says it's not because of piracy but tax bullshittery

@lucy Which can circumvented by other means I suppose. Even if it is something gay as uploading shit to dropbox and then downloading it.

Also the median Age is of the entire EU is also around 45. The median age of EU parliament is around 50. Most customers of the computer workshop I used to work for was 50 and up. ... Yeah, figures.

@joey @lucy ah yes, completely plausible. I have no reason to ever doubt this information.

@lucy and that's why they're forcing big tech to adapt common standards like USB-C and open their ecosystems to alternative app stores, which among other things "enable piracy and malware"? The EU isn't the American government.

@lucy they seem to be going in the opposite direction though. EU just mandated that ios allow alternate app stores and sideloading, and standard usbc charging port

@lucy @newt The funny thing is that no skill is required. It will destroy itself from the inside with enough time.

@lucy what is that an actual plan in the works in the EU?

@arcana @lucy I wouldn't be surprised. EU has always been playing it on both sides when it comes to anything digital. One example is GDPR, privacy being your right and 2 years later they want to backdoor encryption because bad guys use it and you have to save your children.

If it will ever pass, that's a different question. Probably not.

@phnt @lucy Eh I can see it passing, the EU loves to destroy

@arcana @phnt @lucy What is the law you're all talking about? I can't find anything.

@arcana @lucy I don't think they are that dumb. Yet.

That might change since EU is a dumping ground for bad politicians and they somehow keep getting worse. If something stupid like that passes, I'll probably bypass it like other legislation, or I'll simply not be in the EU anymore.
