@snacks @mangeurdenuage And you also use carbon to get the various carbon oxides out. End result is that a lot of CO2 is produced. The blast furnace fuel is also almost always coke. And you can't make that ecological because there's no way around that, that someone figured out.

In raw ore there is from ~48% to ~72% of iron and pig iron that comes out from the blast furnace (where you process raw iron ore) has 3% to 5% of carbon. To be classified as steel, you need =<2.14% of total carbon content while the usual low-grade-ish steel is below 1.5%. Everything above 2.14% is cast iron.

So you burn carbon, to get rid of oxygen to create carbon oxides to then make CO2 and what's left of the other byproducts. And how do you get rid of the carbon from pig iron? You guessed it. By creating more CO and CO2 using oxygen.

TL;DR You cannot make steel making ecological, which is why EU decided it would be a great idea to kill almost all ironworks in the EU.

@nugger @mangeurdenuage You also use oxygen in electric arc furnaces for additional heating (to make the heating and temperature more uniform) and to create more metal oxides to get rid of contaminants. You simply cannot escape it.

@phnt @mangeurdenuage carbon oxides in ore? You use carbon monoxide to get the oxygen out of the ore and it turns to co2, that's what i meant and what your graphic shows.
Ig if we had fuckoff amounts of green electricity we could electrolyze it instead like aluminium but for now we're still burning coal for elecrricity and it's overall way too expensive

@snacks @mangeurdenuage Not in the ore itself, but later in the process. You get rid of the oxygen from the ore, but it must be bonded to something (carbon monoxide). And then you use carbon to get rid of carbon dioxide and oxygen itself later. retarded

@snacks @mangeurdenuage No, I wasn't trying to argue. I wanted to make my point clearer of why it can't be ecological by explaining it more. The ~~part~~ of my post above is a result of me being dumb and forgetting that the reaction goes from bottom up.

@nugger @phnt @mangeurdenuage hey you know if you go to Pittsburgh in the homestead area they have the remains of the massive steel plant they used to build our navy in WW2? It's all just sitting out there, mega cool! There's hotels there ive stayed at, a burger restaurant, a Dave and busters and even a Panera bread, too! There's still tons of empty lots so it can grow to be even better. It's crazy how far we've come. I heard there were plans to put a casino on the site but that fell through
