@georgia surprisingly it's the reverse. at least according to wiktionary, 'healer' was the older sense of the word, and I guess leeches were called healers on account of their bloodletting abilities.

@georgia actually wait, it looks like it meant "doctor" in proto-germanic but that in turn comes from a PIE word related to bloodletting
