@nyx ive read about several people using mail forwarding services successfully. and apparently it works here? I'm still doing research

@georgia having to do something like that would be fucking stupid and annoying but I would consider it even if just because they're bringing back The Other Half and having a modern version of the N900 has been my holy grail phone for like a decade

@nyx yeah their flagship phone the jp2 is bringing it back. the next batch comes in october and its still open, I believe they get your address when they take the full payment (in late july). the most popular feature people want in an other half is a keyboard, then an e-ink display, so well see if your dream comes true :)

@georgia I've been following Jolla and SailfishOS for years because it's like literally the only thing in the Linux Phone space that isn't a complete waste of time, and especially since they announced C2 have been very interested in what happens with that. it seems like they'll be pretty likely to do the keyboard attachment but yeah the fact that they're not trying to target US markets yet is really annoying, especially given that they could capitalize really hard off all the enmity that Google has been building for Android over the past year with trying to lock it down even further. I'm hoping that they sell enough this run and get enough interest from the US to officially sell to the US because they're like the only real alternative to the iOS/Android duopoly.

@nyx yeah ive felt like a boiled frog with google clamping down on the android ecosystem and with my banking apps no longer working with magisk patches. shit sucks. I want to see how people are running it in the US before shelling out 750 euros for it but I also want it in October and my USBC port is really worn out so I have a time constraint..

@nyx getting the USB port fixed is more expensive (because of course its soldered) than what the phone is worth but I might need to do it

@georgia same. Until last year I had some grips with sailfish os by having a lot of the features(mainly android support) locked behind a subscription but now it's fully open.

One device that I'm somewhat hopefully that will be good and will ship worldwide is the mecha comet but it's still in pre-sale

@georgia @nyx >Banking apps
Why do people keep going with banks that require apps? i really don't get it.

@georgia @subnetter I would not use Android at this point without the existence of GrapheneOS, and if I didn't think that there was a real possibility of the project no longer being viable in the future I would begrudgingly stick with it, but I also hate Android as a technology. you used to be able to more or less use it like a Linux OS but that hasn't been a thing for years and whenever I've thought about customizing something my phone can do it's always like either some hacky userland bullshit or having to write an app with the most dogshit abysmal developer experience imaginable.

like all this privacy free software meme bullshit aside it in practice doesn't feel like software that I can meaningfully understand and tinker with unless I put in a level of investment into learning the platform that is on the level of working with it professionally, and I have better shit to do with my time than program in Java or React darkness

@georgia @subnetter hell if they didn't have their own motherfucking VM that isn't the JVM and I could like write Android apps in Clojure even I'd be fine with it, but even that is some hacky bullshit. it's like all the locked down vertical integration of Apple but without being at least designed well like Apple. worst of both worlds garbage software, I fucking loathe Android.

@georgia @nyx

Graphene is built off the AOSP but it is not the same as stock android. It's stripped down and degoogled with sandboxing features.

People don't hate Graphene devs, they have an issue with Daniel Mikay. Anyone can use their own discretion but I think the devs know their stuff when it comes to operating system security like the kicksecure devs.

FOSS drama is so unserious to me. I don't care about Daniel Mikay being mentally ill or potentially having proof of his various claims, it doesn't change the value of the software for me. On the otherhand, plenty of people on here use Wayland, src.ht, or tools built by a guy who thinks 13 year old girls should have IUDs forcibly inserted into them to prevent teen pregnancies. Not even gonna get into all fucked up things Stallman has said that most men on here defend him over because "muh Linux Jesus uwu'.

@subnetter @nyx my current phone is degoogled and has magisk and microg yet I'm finding theres less and less I can do with it as a rooted phone. I really would like a sailfish os phone ive heard great things about it.

@georgia @subnetter @nyx why can’t a rooted phone hide that it’s rooted smh

@sun @subnetter @nyx it could with magisk but with all this hardware level attestation shit the banking apps have the upper hand

@sun @georgia @subnetter @nyx there is a lot of magisk modules to do that. While a lot of them uses safetynet who can be bypassable with a magisk module, it's always a cat and mouse race, where the app/OS updates to use a new method and the fix stops working

@kumicota @subnetter @sun @nyx my old magisk modules worked for years but suddenly stopped...

@georgia @subnetter @sun @nyx I had that for one of my banking apps, other banks would work fine with it but that one stopped working and I couldn't find how to fix it

@sun @georgia @nyx yeah I don't care about the purity politics in freetard communities because it all goes out the window when it comes to games or the hardware level anyways lol

@georgia @nyx the solution i arrived at was to not use a bank that requires use of a proprietary phone. i switched to a credit union that provides all their tools through the web and doesn't require a mobile app for depositing paper checks, so that covers my needs.

@georgia @nyx I've not heard of sailfish OS tbh. Yeah rooting has its downsides but that's where Graphene shines since you can have different profiles and sandboxing rules though I heard things like Android Auto won't work unlike with Stock Android. Functionality is reported to mostly be the same since Play Store and Google Camera and Keyboard can be used and set as defaults if desired.

@dcc @georgia @nyx I don't think it's necessarily required, it has to be a matter of convenience with the modern world. Apps are advertised as as supplementary service. You can physically go to the bank or log into the website on the computer.

@subnetter @dcc @georgia @nyx Some banks are now pushing for app 2FA instead of using one of those old token things.
