I took a year of Mandarin and it was not that hard to speak tbh, I guess people don't do it because of the writing, which is terrible to learn.

@sun I’ve continuously BTFOed by the writing. A beginner has no choice but to rote memorize the characters, which isn’t easy given that they’re not simple one or two-stroke letters found in Occidental languages.

@jeff I can't speak or understand mandarin anymore though, it was 19 years ago.
