@snacks it doesnt need to know where it is, thats for the ground device to figure out

@desea so the ground device needs a database with the trajectory of all the satellites and accurate timekeeping? Idk how else youcd go from knowing what satellites are over you to knowing where you are

@desea @snacks it only needs to know where it isnt. by knowing where it isnt, the satellite knows where it is

@desea the satellites broadcast their position tho? Apparently they use time of flight triangulation with ground stations to figure out their own position, so the same principle receivers use which seems like an obvious solution in hindsight

@desea i'm wondering what your information was on how this works. I obv also got mine online and i got one source on this since everyone just explains how to figure out where you are relative to the sattelites, which doesn't get you far with ones that aren't geosynchronous

@snacks @desea The satellite knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation.
