@snacks @coolbean @twinspin6 Blame manufacturers for making bikes with 10+ gears on the back and a single front gear. The chains are so small that they can't handle it. On the other hand if you have a tendency to use harder ratios and rely more on muscle strength, belts won't last long either.

@phnt @coolbean @twinspin6 i have 11 speeds on the back AND 2 in the front lmao. It is nicer to drive like this tbh but front derailleurs a fuck and 11 speed needs lots of maintainance.

@snacks @coolbean @twinspin6 Probably aren't made out of regular rubber but kevlar or similar. And the tension of the belt isn't as bad on it as the change of being (dis)engaged with the teeth. Tension stretches the belt over time, (dis)engagement tends to rip the teeth out of the belt. Probably why the teeth are so big on the pic. Kinda how cycling on "bad" gear ratios with a chain stretches it, and regular cycling wears out gear teeth (while also stretching it).

Same happens with normal gear-gear transmissions btw. Load a car transmission/differential when trying to launch the car. Do it enough times and the rapid change from an unloaded gearing to a fully loaded one will easily shatter hardened teeth. The magnitude of the force changes is way higher of course.
