@twinspin6 @corpsedoll imagine entering your password twice and your servers not being able to restart without your physical presence

@twinspin6 @fiore yeah some explanation is definitely warranted because the worst case scenario i have ever encountered was just making an lvm group inside a luks partition and enabling whatever module in an initrd generator

@corpsedoll @fiore beyond setting up a partition it's just setting a crypttab entry and a fstab entry and having the cmdline argument or whatever

@fiore @corpsedoll there's tpm2 encryption or alternatively something like tang

@fiore @twinspin6 something operating as a server is subject to rather different requirements as personal machines such that they usually don't warrant FDE the way that personal devices do. and even when they do you can just stick an SSH server in initrd

@twinspin6 @corpsedoll maybe if i end up reinstalling my laptop i will consider it . but like on desktops and servers it just sounds annoying and wackware .

@fiore @corpsedoll imagine caring about systemd and possible replacements but not FDE

@fiore @twinspin6 its come to my attention only recently that you are a euro so obviously i cannot expect your european mind to comprehend but when you've got brownshirts that are chomping at the bit to have at your computers and many friends who are counting on you to not let seizure of your devices not fuck them over either it is certainly worth caring about for the minimal amount of effort it entails

@fiore @corpsedoll you "don't care" about one part of a system but deeply care about another (deeply caring about an init system is completely optional) while claiming not to be a nerd
how does that make sense

@twinspin6 @corpsedoll its not that i dont care about it . i dont care about using it . because i dont have a real usecase for it and it would just be an annoyance to me without any benefits

@fiore @twinspin6 @corpsedoll i use it on my laptop so if its stolen no data can be recovered. this is about the extend to which i find it useful too leave my pufferfish wife alone

@coolbean @fiore @corpsedoll that is the only extent you can have for data encryption bean akko_aaa

@twinspin6 @fiore @corpsedoll if someone takes my desktop computer standing 3 meters to my right in my bedroom, i have worse problems so i dont bother with it for this use case

@twinspin6 @corpsedoll @fiore i do stand behind FDE for server hardware though, in that case its my responsibility to protect the data of my users. thats what makes me different from kolektiva

but yea server and mobile devices are where i see the primary use case

@coolbean @fiore @corpsedoll i mean you don't necessarily need FDE for server boot disks if you have like a hardened setup (i.e. encrypted ram and maybe tpm measurements)
but for user data that is kinda important yes

@fiore @corpsedoll i used fde on my laptop years ago but for some reason i havent since. i probably should, out of the fact that right now i live in a really dangerous area and its a miracle my shit hasnt been stolen, but i dont think theres a way to do it without reinstalling everything right?
