@twinspin6 (it locks up with irrational numbers, not sure if periodic in binary was also an issue)

@snacks see that's a bad one
check out qalculate

@snacks it has all the functions that a calculator should have
idgaf about rpn vs non rpn

@twinspin6 if i actually needed a calculator a lot i'd consider getting the swiss hp replica

@snacks crazy how people developing a software(!) calculator think it's fine not to have at least all of the feature a physical calculator has

@snacks i grab my physical one because all of the software ones suck

@twinspin6 only non-basic feature i usually need are logarithms and converting between bases. If i want an actually good calculator i usually go to wolframalpha

@snacks well so you admit that it sucks and you need internet access for a good one

@twinspin6 yeah, but wolfram alpha is way beyond any calculator i've owned

@snacks that is where the actual software calculators are

@snacks i just think any software calculator running on modern hardware should perform at least as good as a rather constrained physical calculator

@twinspin6 issue is that 99% of the time you just want to add a bunch of stuff together and don't need to get some insane integral

@snacks then put it on a separate tab or whatever the option should be there

@zuki @twinspin6 the original cable is for use with serial ports lmao. Could find a used usb version but it's still not that cheap https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/texas-instruments-ti-graph-link-usb-connectivity-kit-i-o/3157970526-77-2456

@zuki @twinspin6 yeah, can't find it cheaper rn

indeed yes its serial. they're about 20 bucks iirc but thats still cheaper than trying to order the parts i need to make a new one lol

@zuki @twinspin6 yeah, apparently it used to be cheaper to diy than to buy it but hasn't been the case for a while

issue is that 99% of software calculators are developed by people that dont know shit about maths or hardware calculators so this is all they're capable of

@zuki @twinspin6 everyone used to buy these really simple office calculators before smartphones too, windows hides everything more advanced behind settings. The average boomer prob doesn't know calculators can do more than subtraction addition, multiplication and division and seeing more symbols would scare them.

I do agree that a good calculator app should have more advanced features and emulators for programmable ones are a thing for a reason but it's a pretty niche usecase i think

@snacks @zuki that's the thing
KDE slogan or something simple by default powerful if needed
put it behind an advanced knob idc let me have my niche nice calculator

@twinspin6 @zuki i'm trying out emulators for programmable calculators, why tf do they all have to use bad images of the thing as ui aicry

@twinspin6 @zuki also, there's i shitload of scientific calculators in the play store, even paid ones somehow

@snacks @zuki see that is the other side of the spectrum
just like these fake vst synths
idk why they do it

@twinspin6 @zuki why do so many calculators only do log10() and ln() smh my head

@twinspin6 it asks if you want to do xor when entering ^ but can't actually calculate xor?

@twinspin6 i'm mentally stunded, please forget i ever said this

@twinspin6 @zuki also, fucking around with them a bit i realized that only being able to see the last 2 elements of your stack can be a bit annoying, or at least i'm not used to it. Prob not intended to write out all your numbers/variables and then the operators lmao

@twinspin6 only thing i'm missing are more complex views from wolfram alpha like multiple ways to write the equation, graphs and being able to display fractions. It seems i found where the devs started getting lazy after writing something good

@fiore how is that an "app"
i'm deliberately using the slop word

@fiore @twinspin6 before this turned into something so big i also wanted to mention programming languages as ultimate calculators

@snacks @fiore i am doing that already
it's about the ergonomics

@twinspin6 @fiore the most retarded thing i ever did was using cforth in termux as my calculator because i needed something that can do recursion and i was too lazy to download anything else

@fiore @twinspin6 i don't think cforth even has floating point support
