Is a 9060 + Ryzen 5 7500f good or is that bad

@eris why not go for am4 on a budget?

@snacks isn't that a big performance loss

@eris depends, if you want to game you could maybe get a x3d cpu which should be a perf gain. Otherwise you could get something with moar cores.

@eris i think current gen ryzens without extra cache are still slower in games than 5800x3d

@eris yeah that’s pretty good

@eris and amd is still releasing new budget cpus with 3d cache for am4

@halva I could do that. I'm planning to spread out the purchases over a couple months

@snacks what setup would you do for like $800

@eris didn't realize just how cheap that cpu is. But i think 9060 xt (9060 doesn't seem to be a thing?), cheapest am4 mb i can find, 5700x3d and 16gb of ram are only slightly above 800€.
Mindfactory is having a moment rn tho so annoying to get prices.
Maybe for 800€ am5 is actually better esp since motherboard prices seem to have finally come down there

@eris whew, actually fits nicely

@eris upgrade motherboard and ram as you want

@eris wanted to look for american prices but i only know microcenter and they don't have the 5700x3d?

@halva @eris definitely get that 9060xt 16gb, that bump in vram will quickly get handy for higher resolution textures

@snacks what does the x3d do that makes it better than current gen?

@eris @bl00d 7500f is the best midrange cpu rn imo

@halva @bl00d yay:)

I haven't done this in like 15 years lol, but I can't keep using a Steam Deck

@eris @halva sure, 6 cores/12 threads is more than enough, you will first reach 100% gpu usage first with games anyway. Looking for different cpu would make sense if you would like to have an integrated gpu or would build an expensive proeloeloultra90004k pc setup

@eris @bl00d definitely can load up any X60 and X70 GPU on the market and has enough wiggle room for undervolting

@bl00d @halva funny enough I'm probably gonna mainly play old games like Guild Wars lol

@eris has a shitload of extra cache which makes it like 20% faster in vidya

@snacks @eris don't buy am4 cpu, unless you already have am4 mb

@eris @halva @bl00d that cpu, according to iceberg tech, is good enough

@condret @eris why not? Even the 5700x3d seems faster than most 7000 series cpus and motherboard and ram are a bit cheaper

@condret @eris 5600x3d would be even faster in games and cheaper but that's out of production it seems

@snacks @eris because with am5 you have the option to upgrade cpu later without buying a new mb and ram

@snacks @eris the 5600x3d is a 5800x3d with 2 broken cores and lower clockspeed

@snacks @eris i suspect that in the end all of this is overkill for the games eris wants to play. Just get some used office pc with a ryzen 3600, put 32gb of ram, better psu and a rx 7600 xt in it, and that would probably still be overkill

@condret @snacks I'm gonna go budget am5 with a good GPU, I'll play old games on it yeah but then I'll have the option to branch out too. Rather that than decide later I should have spent a couple hundred more

@eris @halva @bl00d I realize you're looking for an exuse to buy stuff, but wouldn't a Deck attached to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse work? I play old games on mine that way and it's quite comfy akko_shrug

@mold @halva @bl00d That's what I do now but there's a lot that it doesn't work for. Guild Wars 2 as an example performs like absolute ass on the Steam Deck. Is it playable? Yeah but like 20-30fps and low settings and becomes a stop motion picture in any boss fight.

Even The Sims 2 performs really bad. The Steam Deck is like having a budget laptop from 2015, it's really not a permanent solution just a fun toy

@eris @snacks don't underspend on MB. VRMs are important https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=57X2FygcqLE

@eris @halva @bl00d huh, maybe I was lucky. I'm fine with 30fps, but the only way I managed to slow it to a crawl was Stellaris endgame, and that kills everything anyway.

@mold @halva @bl00d I normally play on PS5 so 30fps makes me so nauseous now

@eris @halva @bl00d after some thinking, I've figured it out: I must never play on anything better than SD, and then I'll die happy. Thanks for the warning 🫡

@mold @halva @bl00d or don't play things that depend on the CPU like I do haha
